A Message from Our CEO

March is one of my favorite times of the year. I love Women’s History Month because it reminds us just how powerful women have always been in shaping the world around us.

At Vista Maria, that history is a major part of who we are. Our mission began with Saint Mary Euphrasia, a woman who refused to accept that compassion had limits. In the 1800s, when many women and children were dismissed or forgotten, she stepped up and created an international network centered on dignity, opportunity, and the belief that every person deserves a chance to thrive.

She didn’t wait for permission. She saw a need and said, “Let’s go.”

That same spirit lives on today. I see it in the women leading organizations, mentoring young people, advocating for families, and showing up every single day to make our communities stronger. I also see it in the women on our staff, in our volunteers, in our partners, and especially in the young women we serve who are discovering their own strength and voice.

Women’s History Month isn’t just about celebrating the past. It’s about continuing the work and asking ourselves how we can open more doors, support more families, and create more opportunities for the next generation.

The women who changed history didn’t just admire progress. They built it.

At Vista Maria, we’re proud to carry that legacy forward every day.

Let’s go. 💪

Malik's Story

On the basketball court, Malik* looks like any other teenager.

He goofs around with his teammates, runs drills, and shows off a little when he makes a shot. Tall, lanky, and full of energy, he looks like a young man with his whole future in front of him.

But a few years ago, that future felt a lot less certain.

After being involved in a serious altercation, Malik was placed on probation with a high level of supervision, including an electronic tether. Through a court order, he was connected to Vista Maria’s Juvenile Justice Care Management team.

They didn’t just see the mistake he’d made. They saw a teenager who needed structure and people who would keep showing up for him. And Malik showed up, too. He was willing to do the work and make a change.

It wasn’t easy. It meant having hard conversations and staying accountable every step of the way. In counseling, he worked through the anger and frustration he’d been carrying. Through the Check & Connect program, an academic mentor helped him stay focused on school. In time, he rebuilt trust and even earned a reduction in his level of supervision, a sign of how far he had come.

Today, Malik remains charge-free, and is on track to graduate in June! He's active in basketball and football, where he continues to find encouragement, structure, and positive peer connections.

Looking back, Malik says, “Probation was a lot-- and a lot of paperwork-- but it prepared me for life. Therapy was really helpful. I will not get into any more trouble.”

His words show just how much he’s grown. He understands the consequences of his actions, takes responsibility for the choices he’s made, and is committed to making better ones moving forward.

Stories like Malik’s are possible because of people like you, our incredible community of supporters who believe in the power of second chances.

Small Acts of Kindness Change Lives

In February we celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day, a reminder that even small gestures can make a BIG difference.

For many young people who age out of foster care, the journey toward independence can be long and unexpected expenses or emergencies can quickly become major obstacles.

That is why Vista Maria has an Alumni Assistance Fund.

This fund allows us to offer a hand when former clients face urgent needs like groceries, transportation, or emergency housing costs.

Sometimes one small act of kindness at the right moment is all it takes to help a young person stay on track.

Your support ensures that young people who have worked hard to build independent lives always know they have someone in their corner.

Volunteer Opportunities

Weekly Garden Volunteers

We're also looking for recurring weekly volunteers to help care for Sr. Janice’s Butterfly Garden on campus.

This peaceful garden provides a place of reflection and beauty for youth, staff, and visitors. Volunteers will help maintain flowers, identify weeds, and support the health of the garden throughout the season.

If you enjoy working outdoors and have some familiarity with flowers and plants, this is a wonderful way to support!

Help Our Foster Families Care for Babies

When a family member or foster parent steps up to care for a baby or toddler, they may not have all the necessary supplies on hand.

You can help more people say "yes" to opening their homes by shopping our Amazon wish list and helping them stock up on the baby essentials.

In the article, CEO Kathy Regan reflects on the legacy that shaped Vista Maria and the vision guiding its next chapter, including new opportunities to support women and families building stable, independent lives.

It is an honor to have our work highlighted alongside other ministries carrying forward the Good Shepherd mission around the world.

Our New Building in the Old Redford District!

Right now it’s mostly open space and a few folding tables… but just wait! This Detroit building, purchased last summer, will soon be buzzing with activity as the new home for our Juvenile Justice and STEPS programs through InSight Youth & Family Connections. Located in the Old Redford neighborhood, the space still shows little hints of its past life as the historic Old Redford Theatre. Popcorn anyone? 🍿✨

We’re excited to be back in Detroit for the first time since the 1940s and even more excited to be part of this incredible community. Stay tuned-- we’ll be sharing more updates as this space transforms!
