There are numerous events coming up, so be sure to read below and to check the website for information and activities that might interest you. The popular Book Club has selected books for March, April, May and June - surely at least one would entice you to join the Club! And please stop in and say hello to Carrie Bearse, YPL's new Assistant Librarian.
And remember: "When in doubt go to the library." (J.K. Rowling)

YPL Welcomes A New Librarian!
|
Barnstable resident Carrie Bearse joins YPL as
Assistant Librarian
By Dinah Wolff, President
Recent visitors to the Library will have noticed a new face behind the circulation desk. After a multi-month search, the Trustees chose Carrie Bearse to fill the position vacated by Lynn Lesperance's retirement in early December. Carrie is a long-time Barnstable resident, and an active volunteer in that community on its Old Kings Highway Committee, at Sturgis Library, and formerly in the West Barnstable Elementary School Library during her sons' years there.
Leslie and Carol were involved in her selection, and have been looking forward to working with Carrie, and to reducing the many extra hours they've worked in the past three months. Thanks also to Susan Saposnik, Nancy MacEachern, a
nd everyone else who joined staff in providing library services during this period.
I hope that the Charles & Carolyn Gale Project will have been completed by the time you receive this Yardarm. Last year, when Charles died within a year of Carolyn, the Board voted to set aside a special area in the rear of the Library in memory of these two Trustees who were so invested in the Library's welfare; this will be a space where patrons can read or study away from the chatty and social Reading Room in the front of the building. (This has never been a "shhh" type of environment, and we like it that way.)
This project has been ongoing for some time, requiring carpentry, electrical outlets (usb connections!), carpeting, a much-needed deaccessioning of non-circulating material, and the selection and purchase of furnishings. We appreciate the generosity of Marcio Silva, owner of Mark Baker Painting, who painted the rear wall at no expense to us, and of Kathy and Gerry McClellan, donors of the space's glass table top.
We also thank Coachlight Carpets from Centerville, which reached out to me when I complained on a local website (NextDoor Direct) about an estimate offered by the new owner of a carpeting firm previously used by the Library. Steve and David Luciani are the father/son owners of Coachlight, located on Rte. 28 in the Centerville Shopping Center for close to 40 years. Consider them if you're looking at a project for your home, and do mention YPL; we appreciate their honest pricing and their years of experience.
Thanks also to Duncan Oliver for his recent program on "What You Didn't Know About the Pilgrims," one which generated so many attendees (90+) that many were turned away. Duncan was good enough to offer it again, where we had the same seating issues a second time! Those who missed his highly entertaining delivery can attend a June 15th presentation at the Museum of Natural History on Route 6A in Brewster.

YPL is busier than ever.
|
"We enjoy being your village library."
By Leslie Altman, Librarian
In 2020 the Yarmouth Port Library has been busier than ever. We hosted Duncan Oliver's talk on 'What You Didn't Know About The Pilgrims" in January, and to our dismay, we had to turn people away. Duncan graciously agreed to repeat his talk in February, with the same result: huge crowds.
We are very thankful for our neighbors: The Compass Rose Inn, the Congregational Church, and the Fire Station opened their parking lots for us. Everyone managed to squeeze in, and we appreciate Duncan's efforts and the patience of our visitors.
Take a moment to look at the program offerings for the spring on page 2. We have a public service program on an issue on the Town warrant, concerning the Community Preservation Act and how your taxpayer dollars will be spent. We also have a "tick talk" and a gardening program to help get us ready for spring. The gardening program is designed to help us "garden for life." We know it's good to get our hands dirty; we just don't always know how to get back up after we have been working in the soil. If this problem sounds familiar, come to the talk in March for some new ideas about gardening as we age.
Progress on the Gale Room is coming along. Soon we will have a quieter area and a sunny space for our loyal readers. We continue to try to bring you the best of new fiction and nonfiction, as well as providing you with ways to interact with each other. It is our pleasure to help you find what you want, from DVDs to tax forms. Let us know if we're missing something.
We enjoy being your village library!

The Library Book
by Susan Orlean
On the morning of April 28, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. The fire was disastrous: it reached two thousand degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library-and if so, who?
Author Susan Orlean delivers a reflection on the past, present, and future of libraries in America" (New York magazine) that manages to tell the broader story of libraries and librarians in a way that has never been done before.

Twenty-seven-year old Anne Elliot is Austen's most adult heroine. Eight years before the story proper begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy.
The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne's family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate. All the tension of the novel revolves around one question: Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love?

Flight of the Sparrow
by Amy Belding Brown
She suspects that she has changed too much to ever fit easily into English society again. The wilderness has now become her home. She can interpret the cries of birds. She has seen vistas that have stolen away her breath. She has learned to live in a new, free way.
Based on the compelling true narrative of Mary Rowlandson,
Flight of the Sparrow is an evocative tale that transports the reader to a little-known time in early America and explores the real meaning of freedom, faith, and acceptance.

Mark Baker Painting Services LLC
(508) 394-0250
For years, you've probably been seeing Mark Baker Painting signs everywhere along Route 6A, often in
front of the
Library. The company, located in Yarmouth and now owned by Mark's long-time employee, Marcio Silva, continues to provide the same great service and high quality materials and workmanship for which it has always been known.
The firm's most recent job for the Library was to repaint the interior area at the rear of the first floor that will be dedicated to the memory of Carolyn and Charles Gale, and Marcio did it at no charge as his contribution to the project.
If you need interior or exterior painting work, please give Mark Baker Painting a try, and when you do, be sure to mention the Yarmouth Port Library.
