Court Surface Work To Begin Later This Year
After months and years of investigating, planning, consulting, preparation, and deliberation, the board has approved a contract with Court One of Granite Quarry to rebuild our tennis/pickleball courts. Work will begin later this year, with final touches to be completed next spring. When finished, the area will feature one permanent tennis court, two permanent pickleball courts, and two other pickleball courts employing portable, thus removable, nets.

The decision comes three years after the board agreed to spend $35,000 to rebuild and reinforce the slope north of the courts, which over the years had eroded. Court One's $169,791 bid calls for them to pulverize the existing asphalt, which will be blended with the compact stone base. In addition, the retaining wall will be rebuilt, and 230 feet of drainage pipe will be installed to help with water removal and thus remedy a cause of erosion for the existing court surface. All that work will be completed this year. The final court color surface and line painting will be completed next spring, the earliest Court One can complete that task.

After years of living with the cracked, deteriorated surface, the board is confident the new courts will draw more pickleball and tennis players to enjoy this extraordinary amenity.

A detailed copy of Court One's proposal will be available soon as an appendix to the July 28 board minutes when they are posted on our website.

Progress On Streetlights
A major hurdle was cleared Tuesday when Davidson County electrical inspectors approved our LED streetlight installation. That means that the entire system is that much closer to being illuminated.

Project coordinator Jim Johnson and his able assistant, Jim Kelley, have guided this whole project from inception to conclusion. The result is the handsome set of streetlights, featuring much less glare than the previous lights, that will soon be lighting our way through The Springs at night. One of the best things about this new system is that it will save the HOA thousands of dollars each month in electricity bills.

One significant step remains. Our electricity supplier, Energy United, will need to send a crew to complete the hookup of the wiring to the meters that will measure our electrical consumption. Once that happens --and it could be quite soon -- testing of the circuits will ensure that everything works as designed.

August fact: August was once the sixth month of the year. In the original ten-month Roman calendar, the month went by the name of Sextilis, meaning “the sixth month” in Latin. It wasn’t until around 700 BC that August was rudely shoved back in the order of months when January and February were added to the beginning of the year by King Numa Pompilius.

Trivia Answer: 3
If you were born in August, here’s why "peridot, sardonyx, and spinel" are your birthstones. (Click on birthstones to see images).

August babies are now part of a select group that has three birthstones. We say now because just a few years ago, the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) and Jewelers of America (JA) authorized spinel to join peridot and sardonyx as an official August birthstone.

Spinel is only the third update to the birthstone list since it was officially created in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers Association, now JA.
