A Message From The Firewise Committee
Hello from the Firewise Committee,

We would like to remind all homeowners that in the event of a fire, trucks must be able to get down your driveway to get to your home. If there are overhanging tree limbs, they may obstruct or damage the fire trucks. We suggest that you remove all tree limbs that overhang the driveway to a height of at least 12 feet.

Remember that if there is a neighborhood fire, and you are forced to leave, the last one out should put out the mailbox flag. This way the firefighters will know that the house is empty and won't have to waste time checking.

Many of you will remember that, for a number of years, The Springs has participated in a brush removal program. It usually takes place in late fall or winter. This program is sponsored by the state Firewise program in the form of a grant. To qualify, we must show that we are already actively involved in fire mitigation. One of the things that will demonstrate that is to show that we are removing dead trees, down trees, and brush on our own. If you have had any of that type of work done this year and are willing to share a copy of the invoice with the Firewise Committee, that would be very helpful.

Yoga On The Mountain
Honor Your Body

Looking for a good stretch workout without injury? Check out Mountain Yoga at our clubhouse, Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:30-9:30 AM. You might find us socially distanced with cross ventilation in the clubhouse, on the back deck, or at poolside. We’re a flexible group!

We are lucky to have two great leaders, Kathy Sill and Lauren Jackson, who trade off duties, as well as Rodney Yee’s DVDs available in a pinch. We start off slowly and then build a little speed. Don’t be intimidated by ‘down dog’ or ‘plank.’ You’ll catch on quickly to the few terms used. Our routines are easy to pick up with lots of repetition.

The only rule is, don’t push your body where it doesn’t feel good going. Nothing should be painful. If it hurts, stop immediately and dial back. You will learn to breathe properly and deeply through each pose; you will learn several balance poses (every pose is a balance challenge to me), and calming meditation-relaxation.

Hope to see you soon at the clubhouse for yoga with a powerful view!

Trivia Answer:
Henry David Thoreau

It is an often-repeated tale that, as a young man, the famed American writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau quit his job at a pencil factory by announcing: “That I have now made the perfect pencil, so why make any more!” Without context, this tale seems whimsical and paints Thoreau as one of those artistic types that would quit their job to go write essays by a pond (which, in fairness, he did).

The context of the statement, however, is quite important. Thoreau wasn’t working for a summer at a pencil factory and giving his boss a flippant remark while on his way out the door. Thoreau was the son of a pencil maker, John Thoreau, and as a young man he not only worked in the family business, but also revolutionized the industry.

The graphite deposits in New Hampshire, where his father’s business was based, were of poor quality and made for poor quality pencils. Thoreau rediscovered an old technique for using clay as a binder that turned the soft New Hampshire graphite into a firm pencil lead. These clay/graphite mixtures were numbered 1 through 4 based on their hardness, giving us the now ubiquitous #2 pencil that all U.S. students are instructed to use on standardized tests.

In addition to his clever use of clay, Thoreau also invented a method for more effectively inserting lead into the pencil. All told, Thoreau wasn’t making a glib comment when he proclaimed he’d made the perfect pencil and was ready to move on with his life and do other things; he was making a statement of the fact that he had no more left to give to the pencil industry.
