2002 Annual Meeting
The Springs’ annual meeting was held on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Southmont Fire Department with refreshments provided by our Social Committee prior to its start. Complete minutes of the meeting will be available on the website in the near future.

Many thanks to outgoing board members Karl Svatek, President; Curtis Ish, Secretary; and Cathy Moore, Director, for their service to the community over a number of years.

After much discussion on the manner in which the election of the new board should take place, the following members were elected to the board:

Steve Barnhart
Debbie Bethune
Jerry Bushey
Ed Hancock
Steve Vogel

Concern was expressed over the board’s voting of proxies for the election of board members. The voting was conducted in the same manner as prior years and complies with statutes applicable to the process. Having said that, the outcome of the voting was the same, with and without, the board’s proxies being counted. In coming months, the board will review and discuss alternative voting procedures that might possibly be used.

In the past, several members have indicated they would like to see the board allow more input and participation from the community during the year. To respond to this, the new board will initiate a couple of changes allowing more access to the board. When timing makes it possible, the board will include the next meeting's agenda in the newsletter. Additionally, the board will schedule one meeting quarterly where an open period is provided for community input. At those meetings, the committee reports will be given and then a half-hour open period will be available for community input. The closed board workshop will continue after that period. We expect to hold those sessions at times when as many as possible can participate. The next meeting dates are as follows:

November 17 Board Workshop 10:00 AM
December 15 Board Workshop 10:00 AM
January 17 Open meeting/Board workshop 6:30 PM clubhouse

The new board looks forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Please contact any of us with issues you would like addressed or use the HOA Board email link on the website.

Did You Know? Cider vs. Apple Juice: Apple juice and apple cider are different because of the amount of processing each receives. Arguably, apple cider is the more autumnal drink for many, but that’s not because it’s got some special fall spices or additional ingredients. It’s because the beverage is pure, unfiltered apple juice that hasn’t gone through a pasteurization process to make it smooth and sweet.

Lake Drawdown - Reminder
Cube Hydro has scheduled a two-week drawdown of High Rock Lake for December 1, 2022 – December 14, 2022 (weather dependent). The lake will be drawn down over a period of days to a maximum of eight feet below the full pool elevation. Real-time lake levels can be monitored at www.cubecarolinas.com/lake-levels.
The Springs' HOA asks that boats be removed early from the community docks to avoid any complications with the drawdown. Individuals with private docks may also want to take note of the above action.

Last Call: Dead Wood Pickup 2023
So far, 15 homeowners have applied to assemble piles of flammable, dead wood lying on their property that will removed free of charge by the North Carolina Forest Service. There are still very many home and lot owners who would benefit from participating. We have slots available but must submit our application at the end of November. Please consider applying before the deadline.

Send an email to Bruce Fleming [email protected], and he will provide you with all the details.

Denton Community Christmas Outreach Coordinated By The Social Committee
Working with the South Davidson Resource Center and Denton schools, The Springs will support families in need with a tree of "wish ornaments" for Denton families. We hope families in our community will take an ornament at the holiday party on December 3 to support a family in need, purchase the items listed, and return them on December 16 to the clubhouse or anytime earlier to Liz Roland at 195 Tor Court. The Social Committee will wrap and distribute your gifts to the Denton families. Cash donations will also be accepted for food purchases to accompany gifts. If you are unable to attend the holiday party but wish to participate in our Christmas outreach, please contact Liz Roland at 910-228-3312.

We hope The Springs community will help spread the true meaning of Christmas to families in need in Denton.

Trivia Answer: Use Designated Drivers
Starting in 1988, the Harvard Medical School, through the Harvard Alcohol Project, conspired with both Hollywood and the major television networks like ABC, NBC, and CBS to insert a new notion into the American consciousness: designated driving.

At the time, alcohol-related car crashes were the leading killer of Americans aged 15-24, and the project sought to create and enforce the concept of designating one member of each party as the member who would abstain from alcohol for the evening and be capable of safely driving everyone else home. Over the ensuing years, script writers would insert the concept into movies, sitcoms, and television dramas, and all the major networks aired frequent designated driver public service announcements. During the first four years of the project, over 160 prime time television programs incorporated the concept of a designated driver into the plot of the show.

The campaign proved enormously successful, and by the end of the 1990s, the majority of adults surveyed had been a designated driver or been brought home by one at some point.
