Yard Sale Benefits Three Organizations
Thank You, Springs
The Springs Social Committee extends a huge thank you to our Springs community for your generous yard sale donations. Together we were able to raise almost $4,500 for the Healing Springs Volunteer Fire Department's Cliff Carrick Scholarship for junior firefighters and for firefighting equipment. We more than doubled our 2019 yard sale proceeds, thanks to you. Leftover items were donated to the Lexington Humane Society and to the Denton Resource Center. Three organizations benefited from our September 18 sale.

Some unique items that sold included a chicken incubator, a deep-water fishing downrigger, 100's of pairs of new men's and women's socks donated by Walt and Ronnie Kruger, an Orion convection cooker/smoker, a refrigerator, and a large metal file cabinet, which Tom and Lynn Shepler graciously transported to the buyer's home (his Mini Cooper was just a bit too small).

Our success was truly a community effort which began months ago when we started filling our garages with your donations. Thank you again to our Springs community!

A Thank You From The HSVFD...

"To the Social Committee and residents of the Springs at High Rock,

Thank you all so much for all of your hard work, thoughtfulness, and dedication for the benefit yard sale at Healing Springs Fire Department last Saturday. The Social Committee work diligently in planning and execution to make sure that the donation day and yard sale was organized and successful. We are still amazed at the amount and quality of donations received. We really appreciate community residents donating items to raise scholarship funds for the upcoming year. We received official word this morning that you all have raised an amount of $4471.50. We are delighted at the financial prosperity from this venture, as well as, the communal collaboration it created. The Clifton Carrick Student Scholarship, while a relatively new scholarship, is an important step in continuing to train the best firefighters in Davidson County. We very much enjoyed working with the ladies from the committee and look forward to future ventures together. Please feel free to stop by anytime. Should any resident be interested in attending the annual board meeting, that is open to the community, we will host that event on October 19th at 7pm. Until next time, thank you again for your benevolence and service."

Sincerely,
Healing Springs Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary

Greetings, Springs Neighbors!
Fall is in the air! We are excited to gather on October 23 at the clubhouse for our Fall Social beginning at 6:30 PM. We are looking forward to meeting with friends and new residents in our community. During the evening, we will have a splendid photo montage of The Springs’ beauty by Dick Getz Photography, and our own Fred Spin will entertain us on the guitar with song.

Please come and bring an appetizer of your choice. Nonalcoholic drinks will be provided; feel free to bring your own alcohol. We look forward to seeing friends and getting to know our new residents. Please RSVP by October 20 to Liz Tilley, so we can plan for the number of people attending.

Did You Know? A “Hail Mary pass” is, in American football, a very long forward pass, made in desperation and with a very low chance of success. The term became widespread courtesy of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach in December 1975. When questioned about his game-winning but improbably long pass, his response was, “I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary."

Trivia Answer: Playtex
When you think about the history of NASA and space exploration, you might assume that the iconic space suits of the Apollo space program were designed in-house or, at minimum, by a company with a lot of experience in the aerospace industry like Lockheed Martin.

Those sturdy space suits, in fact, were designed by none other than Playtex (then also known as the International Latex Company). While modern readers likely associate the company name with sanitary products, Playtex has a long (and continuing) history in the undergarment manufacturing business. During the latter half of the 20th century, they made bras, girdles, and other elements of the structured wardrobe of mid-century American women.

Given their experience in making very sturdy and multi-layered garments as well as the skilled staff they employed to design and construct said garments, it should come as no surprise that when it came time to build a reliable space suit, they won the bid. The skills required to fashion a quality girdle translated very well to precisely stitching a flexible but sturdy space-ready garment.
