THE SPRUCE TREE JOURNAL

A place of refuge, a time of peace, a message of hope.

December 2025

Ahhh…December. It’s a month of great hiking weather, and it appears that it’s the only time we somewhat like shoveling snow (before it becomes drudgery after the first of the year!). Take an early morning walk in the woods after a snowstorm while the powder still covers the hemlock boughs and embrace the silence. Follow an animal track to see where it is going or where it came from. Visit a cold night away from porch and streetlights to look at all the stars sparkling like tiny diamonds in the sky. December really does have a lot to offer. When you’re done outside, warm up inside with a bowl of butternut bisque (recipe link below) and perhaps a side of Irish treacle bread.

I wish you and yours the magic sparkle of the holiday season. Tim

Merry Christmas! It's a Dog's World Out There

This month's blog is a Christmas letter I had written a couple decades ago. It was my attempt to balance all those other Christmas letters describing the letter writer's perfect spouse, their over-achieving kids, and their ideal shed-less dog who never barfs on the living room carpet. Who actually has a life like that? Who would want a life like that anyway? Really.

So, join me around the campfire. Welcome to my world.

Word Search

Be aware of this month's word manifestation during your travels over the next few weeks.

Sobremesa - [soh-breh-meh-sah]. Noun. Spanish origin. The lingering at the table after a meal and the conversation is full. That in-between time when the food is gone but our hearts remain.

Butternut Bisque

Butternut Bisque is one of my comfort foods, warming my insides during the cold winter months. It freezes well, too. So, make a big batch to keep at the ready.
