My St. George's Story: Joseph Lyttle

For our 2027 Annual Giving Campaign, we are celebrating the People, Place, and Pastoral Leadership that support the ministries of St. George’s. Some St. Georgians – just like you – have generously shared their St. George’s story. We will include them in our e-newsletter over the next few weeks. We hope you enjoy them!

Joseph Lyttle is a member of our vestry, a Lay Eucharistic Minister, and convener for our General Endowment Fund. In his words, “I think that I have received so much from St. George’s and now looking at my life and seeing how much God has given me in my own life just makes me want to give back more.”

We hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch the video and hear Joseph’s St. George’s Story.

Financial Update - This Sunday

Our parish Treasurer, Peggy Mathias, will give a brief update on the finances of our parish this Sunday, October 18, during the announcements at morning services as we prepare for our 2027 generosity campaign. Look for a special communication from our Vestry Wardens this week about our campaign as well.

Youth Pumpkin Patch Trip - Oct. 24

St. George's is inviting all youth members (6th-12th grade) to join us for a trip to the pumpkin patch! We will go to Belvedere Farm on Saturday, Oct. 24th (6:30 pm-9:30 pm) for farm exploring and a bonfire with s'mores! Youth should bring cash or card to purchase any additional snacks or drinks they would like.

Please fill out this registration form to let us know you would like to join us.

Scary Music for Organ - Oct. 30, 7:30 pm

St. George’s will offer a free concert of Scary Music for Organ on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 pm, featuring The Organists of St. George’s (Trystan Bennett, Brooks Kuykendall, Achim Loch, and Lucy Monte). Our most popular annual concert includes haunting renditions of works by J.S. Bach, Beaumont, Chaminade, Elfman, Gounod, Guilmant, Langlais, Mendelssohn, Messiaen, Mozart, and others.

The evening will be sure to be terrifyingly delightful and monstrously entertaining. Feel free to come in costume! The concert is free with donations accepted at the door.

St. George’s Moment in Time

To celebrate the 306 years of our parish, the St. George’s History Commission occasionally will present a moment in time from our past.

St. George’s Timeline: 211 years ago

On Sunday, October 15, 1815, Bishop Channing Moore consecrated the second church building on our present site. “The occasion brought together a larger congregation than was ever witnessed in this place,” reported the Virginia Herald. The following day, the pews were auctioned to be reserved by “subscribers” (church members) as a way to pay for the construction. Income from the auction exceeded the cost of the building so subscribers were offered a refund if they wished. The church had been built without a steeple and it was added the following year, thanks in great part to the funds in excess of the building cost and the subscriber refunds not claimed.

Office Notes:

Our church office is closed on Monday, October 19 for a Staff Cleanup Day. If you have a pastoral emergency and need to speak with clergy, please call or text: 540.361.8573.

Necrology – Remembering Those Who Have Died

As we commemorate All Saints and All Souls, we take time to pray for those who have died in the past year, forming a list called the necrology which is included in the bulletin and will be read aloud on All Saints Sunday during the Celtic worship service. If you would like to add a name to the necrology, please do so here. Please submit names by October 26.

Have Questions About Your Giving?

In 2026 St George’s transitioned to a new financial management platform. Like all such transitions we have had to work out a few issues with our data reporting. Because of that, you may have noticed that there has not been the quarterly mailings of Generosity Statements as we are accustomed to. We are working to get the next round of statements ready and are preparing for end of year as well. In the meantime, if you have questions about your giving to St George’s please reach out to our Parish Finance Director Jake DeNap.

Jeremiah Community Model Home Open House this Sunday - Oct. 18

As Micah Ecumenical Ministries prepares to build a neighborhood of small homes, to be know as the Jeremiah Community, for our chronically unhoused neighbors, the builders overseeing the project recently completed a prototype model home at the Gladys Oberle Academy (404 Willis St, Fredericksburg). If you missed the opportunity to see the home during the open house a few weeks ago, you have another opportunity this Sunday from 12-2 PM. Your hosts will be St. Georgians Nick Cadwallender and Mary Jane O’Neill. Stop by to see this beautiful home and learn more about the project as we anticipate construction of the Jeremiah Community beginning in the next few months.

Tuesday Evening Book Group - Oct. 20, 7:15 pm via Zoom

The group will be reading The Meaning of Jesus: Two Visions, by Marcus J. Borg and N.T. Wright. The Introduction and Parts I and II will be covered at the first meeting on 10/20. Please consider joining us for lively discussions and supportive fellowship. All are welcome. Please contact John Graham (585.478.6209) or Pat Johnson (443.617.7171) for more details, and to be added to the group email list and receive the weekly Zoom link to the meeting.

ECW Meeting - Wednesday, Oct. 28

Just in time for Halloween a captivating program is in store for us! Kylie Thomson/Fredericksburg Area Museum Curator of Collections and Exhibitions will share artifacts and stories that reveal the somber and eerie side of our city: mourning customs, the toll of disease especially on children, the history of Fredericksburg cemeteries and St. George's ghost stories. Our thanks to Cindy Helton of St. George's for her research of St. George's ghost stories. Meet in Sydnor Hall at 5 pm for business meeting and social time. We will then walk to FAM for the presentation. All women of St. George's and their guests are welcome. For additional information contact Maureen Aylward (757.652.0447.)

All Saints Day Neighborhood Remembrance Service: Thursday, Oct. 29

Join with our neighbors at Micah for a special All Saints Remembrance Service on Thursday, Oct. 29. We will meet at the Methodist Green (green space outside of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church). The campsite vigil begins at 5.30 pm, with the candlelight service beginning at 6.30 pm. This important community event gives us a chance to set aside time to remember those in the Micah community who have passed away this year.

Community Dinner - at FUMC through October

On Monday nights we share a meal and a time of fellowship with our neighbors in need. Note that due to the construction in our kitchen, we are continuing to host community dinner with the help of our neighboring churches. All dinners in October will be held at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church (308 Hanover St). Please consider joining us! We are looking for volunteers to assist on the second and third Monday each month. We are also looking for donations of fruit to share with our neighbors. You can sign up here. For more information or assistance signing up, please contact Nana Noi.

Housing still needed for fellow parishioners

We continue to be on the lookout for a room or apartment for a couple of parishioners who are seeking a stable housing situation and are income-limited. Please contact Rev. Joe Hensley for a confidential discussion (with no pressure) if you know of a potential place.

Storytelling and Sharing

Shrine Mont 2026

St. George's enjoyed another memorable Parish Weekend at Shrine Mont! It was wonderful to see different groups of people participating in the various activities offered throughout our time together in the mountains. Our Friday Game Night provided opportunities to reconnect, have fun, and share October birthday cake! On Saturday, groups of youth & adults made the trek up North Mountain or completed the Stations of the Cross hike and walking the labyrinth, others spent the morning sharing personal stories, and our kids explored nature and storytelling too. Our time away included prayer services, flashlight games, a bonfire with s'mores, music, crafts, naps, porch rocking, and newt catching! Even the passing hurricane couldn't dampen our spirits! We missed Sunday service in the outdoor shrine, but had a beautiful service inside shared with our friends from St. Christopher's in Springfield and a large family gathering to celebrate their grandfather's 104th birthday! Mark your calendars for next year - same time, same place!
