A Time to Mourn: Report from LAMB
by Susan C. Keller, LAMB Board Chair
|
|
As many of you know, Suzy McCall’s beautiful 16-year-old, Sallie, died suddenly on Sunday, May 12. Experiencing a heartbreak beyond words, Suzy, the founder and spiritual director of LAMB, has been shatterred, as any mother would be. She had raised sweet Sallie since she was six months. Sallie was one of our very first “God’s Littlest Lambs” that the Lord used to lead the ministry to His vision for starting the LAMB Children’s Home. Many of us have known and loved Sallie all of her life. She was such a precious, loving child. The whole LAMB community is grieving. Yet we are not grieving as those without hope (Thessalonians 4:13,14) as we know that Sallie is with the Lord Jesus, whom she loved, and we will all be together again one day.

Starts on Sunday! Home for the summer?
|

Have you ever wondered how to navigate the often complex nature of relationships? Have you ever felt confused about how to proceed in a difficult friendship or felt dissatisfied with the superficial and oftentimes fickle community that social media offers?
Drawing from the book of Ruth,
“A Loving Life” helps us untangle the world’s idea of love and relationships to form a biblical view of the truest love, the kind of love that we need to embrace relationships, endure rejection, cultivate community, and reach out to even the most unlovable around us as we discover the power to live a loving life.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”––Psalm 119:105
On May 27, a group of 40 St. Philippian pilgrims set out to follow in the footsteps of St. Paul through Greece and Turkey. Please pray for their safety as they travel and for their deepening sense of God's mission for the church. They return June 7.

Disaster Response Team: First Meeting
Wednesday, June 5, at 6:45 p.m. in the Parish House, Room 111
|
|
The St. Philip’s Disaster Response Team is looking for your help! With hurricane season upon us, we are looking to get organized and prepared to assist our fellow parishioners in the event that they are in need of assistance. Disaster response can take many forms, from putting a tarp on a roof, to transporting supplies, to simply stopping by and checking on someone to be sure he or she is all right.
We would like to have members located throughout all of the different areas around Charleston in order to respond to a request for assistance in a timely manner after an event. All types of skills will be needed; if you’re unsure how you can help, there’s no reason to worry. Just stop by this meeting to find out more.

The Fourth Watch: A Call to Prayer
by Gloria Avent
|
|
This morning as I went out the front door briefly on an errand and came back in, my eyes were drawn to our piano. So, I sat down on the bench. There was music there, but just to my left, on the candle stand, there was a service leaflet ... not sure how it got there. I picked it up and saw the familiar words of Psalm 134. In my college days I knew a praise chorus set to this text:
Oh bless the Lord, all ye servants of the Lord,
who stand by night, in the the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands, in the holy place, and bless the Lord,
all ye servants of the Lord.
This struck me as a providential encounter for this reason. Several days ago, I was reading in Matthew 14 beginning at verse 15:
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place and it’s already getting late”…Immediately, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After he dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them.
I began to wonder what time frame the fourth watch represented and as I researched it, I learned that the Romans had added a fourth watch to the already established three watches of the night identified by the Hebrews.

Website Updates Have Begun!
|
|
Over the next few months, St. Philip's staff will be working on organizing the website so that parishioners can easily find the information they're looking for and visitors and newcomers know right away what we're about, what to expect at our services, and how they can get involved in the life of our parish. Our goal is a user-friendly, intuitive website, but if you find yourself having any trouble locating a particular page or bit of information as we update, please talk to any member of the church staff or call the church office at (843) 722-7734.
Do you know someone who's planning on coming to one of our services for the first time?
Share this newly added page, which helps visitors and newcomers understand what to expect on Sunday morning.

Musical Instruments Still Needed!
Haiti Annual Feast Day Mission ~ June 19-24, 2019
|
|
Thank you to all who have donated instruments and dental supplies so far! We are pleased to report that we now have plenty of dental supplies, but we are still accepting musical instruments (new or gently used wind instruments, guitars, and battery-powered keyboards) and would also welcome monetary donations for instruments. The team heading to Haiti will hand-carry all donations.
Items may be dropped off in the church office, or we will gladly pick them up. St. Philip’s is the sole supply source for our sister church community, and we hand-deliver to them each year. We thank you in advance for your kind and generous donations for these basic needs.

Summer Singing with the St. Philip's Choir!
|
|
If you've ever had even a fleeting thought of joining the choir, now is the time to try it out! There are no regular rehearsals during the summer––simply sing on the Sundays you're in town. You do not need choir-singing experience, only a desire to experience singing in the choir!
Choirmaster Pat Gould is currently on the pilgrimage to Greece with limited cell service, but you may contact her by text at
843-364-9552.
|
|
Do you love to sing? There's a spot for you in the Resurrection Choir, which comes together only to sing hymns for parish funerals. Serve God, praise God, and let your voice provide comfort to those who mourn. Contact Pat at the number above if you would like to be on the email notification list.
