The First Sunday in Lent
The Vestry Class of 2022 was voted in at Sunday’s Annual Meeting, and we thank them for answering the call to serve! St. Philip’s also offers the warmest of thanks to the Class of 2019, this year’s outgoing Vestry members, who have faithfully served our parish since 2016: Senior Warden Penn Hagood, Lon Burris, Cary Chastain, and Joanna Macmurphy.
If you missed the meeting, please pick up a copy of the 2018 Annual Report in the church office. The report includes last year’s minutes, the Wardens’ report, updates from various parish ministries and groups, and our parish financial report. A digital copy will soon be available on our website.

In Memory of Dottie Rhett:
St. Philip’s New Steinway
by Patricia M. Gould, Organist/Choirmaster
On March 1, St. Philip’s received a gift from the Rev. Dr. William Rhett in memory of his beloved wife, Dottie: a seven-foot Steinway! A concert pianist, Dottie had played the instrument four hours each day after she’d retired from Charleston Day School, where she had taught for 25 years. Since her death in 2014, the instrument has remained virtually silent. Until now …
Bill is excited to know that the piano will now be used to the glory of God at St. Philip’s. You’ll hear it at the 5:30 service onWednesdays and when the children’s choirs sing on March 17. On March 24, pianist Anna Savelyeva and cellist Maria Savelyeva will play Rachmaninoff’s “Andante” from
Cello Sonata in G minor, Opus 19 as prelude. At the Offertory, the piano, along with the cello, will be used again for Jane Marshall’s “None Other Lamb.” What a glorious day that will be! That music had been planned some two months ago––well before we knew of this most generous gift. God’s timing is always perfect!

The Holy Spirit Moved Mightily at the 2019 Christian Men’s Conference
by Rob Donaldson
The Holy Spirit is alive and well at Camp St. Christopher. Nearly 300 men gathered for the 30th annual Christian Men’s Conference February 22-24, and St. Philip’s was well represented. The theme of the weekend was Reclaiming Biblical Manhood, by focusing on “A Work To Do.” ACNA Archbishop Foley Beach used Paul’s letters to Timothy as his biblical basis for teaching. He walked us through Personal Piety, with elements of a rule of life; he encouraged our Personal Holiness, in order to be more Christ-like; and he taught us about Personal Discipleship, asking us whom we are to disciple.

Women's Lenten Bible Study
Mondays in Lent ~ 9:00 a.m. in the Parlor
Martha Vetter will be leading a five-week Bible study during Lent, beginning Monday, March 11. The study will meet every week leading up to Holy Week. We will be examining different biblical symbols from the Holy Week narrative and making applications to our own lives. These symbols include the alabaster jar that was broken, broken bread and poured out wine, the seed that was buried, the veil that was rent, and the stone that was rolled away.
Join us to discover deepened truths from these Lenten treasures!

Changed Hearts for Christ=Changed Lives:
A Look at Star Gospel Mission
by Jennie O'Bryan
Jennie O’Bryan (4th from left) with fellow St. Philippians, including the Rev. Bill Christian (far right), and Star Gospel General Manager André Lopez (3rd from right)
It was a privilege to tour Star Gospel Mission, a transitional men’s shelter, with other St. Philippians on Wednesday, February 27th. Our tour was led by the Rev. Bill Christian, Executive Director of Star Gospel. We witnessed how this shelter has steadfastly served as a Gospel Mission since 1904. Rev. Christian informed us that changed hearts for Christ results in changed lives. As I walked through the shelter, these words of Jesus came to my mind:
“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
