Gratitude for Gene Lesesne, God’s Humble Servant
by Marnie Kerrison, ECW Spiritual Advisor
|
|
Along with several verses of Scripture, the following served as Marnie Kerrison’s devotional before the November ECW (Every Church Woman) board meeting last week.

Gene Lesesne (center) volunteering in the kitchen with family members during the 2017 Wassail Bowl
If you were at the last ECW meeting in October, you may have heard me mention off the cuff that if we were to lose Gene Lesesne, the Tea Room could not go on. Gene is 82 years old, rides his bike almost daily 20 miles, was a Naval aviator, and flew for Pan Am Airlines as a commercial pilot until he went to teach at the Citadel in the PE department. He was married to Anne, who was a nurse instructor at Trident Tech until she was disabled by rheumatoid arthritis. He was her caregiver until her death just about five years ago. He has two daughters: Angela Clark, who runs the preschool with Lee Moore here at St. Philip’s, and Jessica Martin, who attends and volunteered here as a Sunday school teacher for years. His first great-grand was recently baptized here. I do not know how long the Lesesne family has been attending St. Philip’s, but I know they have a legacy of serving quietly. They have been responsible for the Wassail Bowl celebration every year for as long as I remember.
Well, as you all may know, last week Gene was volunteering at the polls in same ol’ Gene Lesesne fashion, and he passed out, was given CPR, and was sent by ambulance to MUSC, where they were able to open his chest up and wrap the aorta to stop the bleeding from an aortic dissection. Essentially he was bleeding inside his body. God provided someone at the polls who could sustain Gene’s blood flow until help could arrive.

C.S. Lewis Symposium: A Capsule Look
by Elizabeth Scott
|
|
Elizabeth Scott (left) with the Rev. Brian McGreevy, Lavinia Thaxton, and Josie May
On a recent November mid-week, a small group of St. Philippians traveled up to the glorious mountains of North Carolina to attend a much-touted (by our beloved priest and C.S. Lewis aficionado, Brian McGreevy ) C.S. Lewis symposium. The conference was a packed time filled with insights and sharing to encourage us and engage us on our Christian journey. People from 28 states, England, and Malta were drawn to the beautiful village of Montreat for this experience, officially titled “C.S. Lewis: Influence and Relevance Today.”
The symposium delivered on that topic and so much more. Some of the greatest and most recognized Lewis and Inkling scholars came together to share not only the relevancy but the works themselves and the writers behind them.

The Vestry Nominating Committee is now accepting names of prospective nominees for the next Vestry “class.” Please click the link below to read the senior and junior wardens' November 14 letter regarding the process. Copies of the letter are also available in the church office and the narthex.

Registration for this event is officially at capacity, but do not lose heart! Call the church office at (843) 722-7734 to join the wait list. And if you've already registered but now find that your plans have changed, please let the church office know so that someone from the wait list may get a seat at the table.

Christmas Eve Ministry Opportunity
Nativity Tableau, 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. services
|
|
Help us make this Christmas Eve a time of reverent worship as we celebrate the eve of our Lord's birth. This is always a special service with a powerful word from God delivered by our rector, beautiful music by our choirs, and visual splendor provided by the Flower Guild. But with all the activity of the season, it is easy to lose sight of why we celebrate Christmas!
You can help return our focus to Christ our Lord by volunteering to participate in the Nativity tableau, which will be presented at both the 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. services.
We are specifically looking for tall male angels for both services and a Mary and Joseph for the 10:30 service. Volunteers should be ages high school to young adult. (A beard for Joseph is a plus but not a requirement.)
If you are willing to serve in this capacity, please contact Bill Warlick at (843) 810-9926 or click below to email him.

Come join us in the Parlor of the Ministries Hall (corner of Church and Queen Streets) for a weekly excursion into one of C.S. Lewis’s most interesting and accessible books,
The Screwtape Letters
, led by the Rev. Brian McGreevy. A fictional correspondence between a senior devil and a junior devil about how to tempt Christians away from their faith, this book also serves as an engaging and challenging primer on what it means to follow Jesus in a hostile culture. All are welcome!
