The Twentieth Sunday After Pentecost

What's a Foyer Group?
A Foyer Group consists of eight to ten persons, married or single, assigned at random, and meeting, on a rotating basis, in each other’s homes once a month for about six months to share a meal, conversation and fellowship. “Foyer” is a French word meaning “hearthside” – implying the warmth of a close, small group of friends sharing a common friendship.
What's a Foyer Group evening like?
These are strictly social evenings and the keynote is simplicity. There is no agenda and evenings last about two to three hours. Generally the host provides the main dish and others bring the rest of the meal, from appetizer to dessert.
I'd like to sign up, but my house isn't really set up for entertaining and I'm not much of a cook. What can I do?
Remember that you are not hosting a fancy dinner party. Bread and wine is always an option, or you can serve sandwiches or order pizzas and sit or stand anywhere there's room, perhaps on your porch or patio! You are also welcome to share hosting with another member of your group.
I'm new to St. Philip's and I don't really know anyone--can I still join?
Yes! This is the perfect opportunity to get to know other St. Philippians, and ALL St. Philippians are encouraged to sign up! Even longtime members of the church sometimes know many faces but few names. This is a social evening with a real purpose—to know one another better and build a stronger sense of community in the Body of Christ at St. Philip’s as we practice the gift of hospitality.
How do I sign up?

St. Philippians Visit
Tricounty Family Ministries
by Amey Warder, Home Missions Committee
|
|
On Wednesday, Sept. 26th, a group of parishioners took a one-hour tour of Tricounty Family Ministries. We met at the church and carpooled together. What a treat!
We were given the tour by TFM director Sue Hanshaw and volunteer coordinator Marsha Alterman. We saw Tricounty during peak operating hours, touring the food pantry (which we help stock), the donated clothing room, the intake area, the healing hands ministry area, and the social worker and doctors and nurse area. We also saw the volunteer lawyer. We heard from employees (many of whom started as Tricounty clients) and visited the kitchen and dining room during lunch time. What a great way to learn about this important home mission partner.
But read for yourself the reactions of those there that day:
|
|
“Our tour of Tricounty Family Ministries was inspiring. We were impressed by the extensive support services it offers to people in need and the care, compassion and respect with which it delivers those services. Tricounty Family Ministries is an invaluable community resource, and we're looking forward to volunteering there.”
--Amanda Steinhardt, parishioner (pictured at left, on the far right)
“I was so pleased with the number of folks from St. Philip's that took time from their busy schedules to visit TFM. Just watching people’s faces and their reaction to the different programs was very touching. Many were humbled because they never had to worry about being hungry and having food to feed their families, or feeling ashamed because they didn’t have proper clothing for church or work, or were unable to purchase medicine for a life-threatening medical condition. The comments I heard from folks, and the tears that some shed, put a “face” on those in need. Many were very surprised that poverty in Charleston exists and are thankful that TFM is there to minister to the “least of these.” We are blessed to have St. Philip's as a partner in this life-changing ministry.”
--Sue Hanshaw, Director of TFM
We will offer another field trip this winter (dates TBD), but don’t hesitate to get started sooner. Click below for the October volunteer needs, and if you would like to learn more about this amazing ministry, please contact me, Amey Warder, at (843) 452-9742 or
[email protected]
, or ask any of the parishioners who made this trip: Jimmy Hagood, Will Harker, Ruthie Lilly, Shirley Pilcher, Amanda Steinhardt, Max Steinhardt, and Genevieve Swindle.

The Gathering 2018:
A Life Resources Event Featuring
Author Renée Hodges
with an introduction by the Rev. Ryan Streett
Thursday, October 25, at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall
|
|
What began as a naïve decision for Renée Hodges and her family to bring her nephew Bobby into their home turned into a 16-month journey that exposed the ravaging impact of four generations of addicts in Renée’s own family. Renée shares the powerful story of how a strong community that gathered around Bobby played such a vital role in his recovery. Who is your community? Where would you turn if this were one of your family members?

Prescription painkillers are known as opioids (Codeine, Hydrocodone, Tramadol, Morphine, and Oxycontin, just to name a few). Each year, nearly five million opioid prescriptions are filled in South Carolina. That’s close to one prescription for every person in the state. Do you know the connection between opioids and the street drug heroin? Heroin is a type of opioid and 4 in 5 heroin users report starting with opioids.

Attention, Parents of College Students!
|
|
As your children are adjusting to a new year at college, help them feel close to home by adding them to our mailing list! They will love opening their mailboxes each week to find the St. Philip's inSPIRE inside. They can stay up-to-date on parish news and events, and perhaps they will even be inspired to share their stories with us as they embark on this new stage of life.
To add your child to the mailing and/or emailing list, please call Lea Andrews at (843) 722-7734, ext. 232, or click below to email her.

The ECW (Every Church Woman) is looking for a few volunteers to serve on the New Mothers Committee. This committee helps women transition from "expecting" to "mothering" by providing a meal, prayers, and encouragement. If you would like to help, please

The Coronation of King George II, 1727
Sunday, October 21, at 3:00 in the Church
|
|
The Coronation of King George II in 1727 was an event like none other, and it gave us some of the most incredible choral music of the day. With compositions by Purcell, Blow, Gibbons, Tallis, and of course Handel's glorious Coronation Anthems, including the ever-triumphant "Zadok the Priest," The King's Counterpoint is thrilled to once again bring the majesty of "The Coronation of King George II" to Charleston.
Using a program taken directly from the actual order of service graciously provided by Westminster Abbey, this concert will guide the audience through the day of the Coronation, from the first fanfare to the herald's call, with all of the pomp and procession that such a landmark event deserves. Trumpets and drums, processions and glorious music–this October concert event has it all!

Two Weekly Opportunities for Centering Prayer
"Be still, and know that I am God." – Psalm 46:10
If you desire to venture deeply in God's presence, consider joining the Centering Prayer groups who sit together in silent communion with the Lord. The goal is to build a personal habit that allows participants to de-stress and rest in the Lord daily as part of their regular quiet time. Group sessions close with a time for verbal prayer requests and short, focused prayer. We meet Sundays in the chapel during the Sunday School hour and Thursdays in the prayer room from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Questions? Call Pringle Franklin at 843-270-5585 or click below to email her.

Collect (Proper 22):
Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen
