It’s Not Too Late to Submit Your 2020 Pledge Card!
|
|
If you submitted your pledge on January 19 as an act of worship during either service, thank you! Thank you also to the many others who have dropped off or mailed their cards or placed them in the offering plate during other services.
If you have not yet returned your pledge card, please plan to return it this week. Your Vestry would be most grateful, as your pledge helps us prepare our annual budget and plan for various ministerial activities that build up the body of Christ. Extra pledge cards are available in the narthex and the church office. Thank you!

Rhett Andrews (back row, center) with St. Philip’s youth minister David Gilbert, chaperone Alice Smith, and other St. Philip’s youth at the March for Life in D.C. on January 24.
I had an amazing time at the March for Life even though I was a little nervous going into because I didn’t know everyone going with St. Philip’s (or the other 800,000 people who were there). Just as I arrived at the airport, I received a text saying that our flight was delayed but that we should still head on over, which was an interesting start to my experience. At the airport, we prayed as a group, took lots of pictures, said our goodbyes to parents and loved ones, and headed to our gate. We made it through security even though there was an extra L in Lily’s name on her boarding pass. At the gate, we played Spicy Uno (which is Uno with interactive rules like “no talking when someone puts down a 7” or “slap the pile when someone puts down a 6”) and Catchphrase. These two games made the four hours of waiting go by, well, at a normal pace, but they were still fun!
After a short flight, we took a bus to our van, which we would later name Bertha for its stature and strength. Bertha, with the help of David Gilbert, led us to our hotel, where we rested before decorating our signs for the march. While other signs said things like “Adoption Saves Lives” or “Women’s Rights Begin in the Womb,” I decided to go the more traditional route with a Yoda quote: “Judge me by my size do you? Size matters not,” which I, naturally, had to use.
We headed over to the ySummit Conference for youth at Falls Church Anglican, where there were three speakers and lots of barbecue and pizza. We heard about how absolutely everyone–– including those who do not live over a month, those who have disabilities, and those who were aborted––is made in God’s image, how abortion disproportionately affects minorities, and how the government has taken away sixty million dollars in funding from Planned Parenthood. And we heard horrific facts and learned that the abortion pill, which women are told can cause “a little bleeding,” can leave them on their bathroom floor for hours soaking in regret and vulnerability.

Leader Notes on the March for Life
David Gilbert, St. Philip's Youth Minister
Being at the March has had a profound impact on me as a Christian and as a youth pastor. Praying, worshipping, and marching for God who is the Author of life has created a deep dwelling of compassion and hope. Fruitful seeds of righteousness were planted in the hearts and minds of the youth who joined me and the other marchers.

Alice Buist Smith, Parent Chaperone
I had the pleasure of traveling to Washington, D.C., for the ySummit and March for Life with David Gilbert and eight high school youths. The point of our mission, that children are wonderfully made, was exuding in these youths, and prayer was bountiful throughout the trip. The youths did not hesitate to pray and their faith shone through in each word. David is an incredible disciple and his love for God, life, and our children showed forth in each step of the trip and walk. As for the few hiccups of any trip ... no problem, because God truly provides when you have faith! Make your way there next year as your children and you will be blessed in so many ways!

Seeing the Cross:
Notes on Natural Evangelism
by Sarah Silcox, St. Philip's Youth Leader
|
|
Evangelism. Up until one week ago, I was scared of that word. It carries so much meaning, so much responsibility. On Sunday, January 20, Canon J.John came and spoke at the Rector’s Forum and preached that morning. While I was unable to hear his talk at the Rector’s Forum (I’m definitely listening to it this week!), I heard his sermon. It was so spirit-filling and encouraging that I knew I had to attend his talk the following Tuesday.
I’m one to take notes during any type of educational experience (mostly because my mind will wander if I don’t) and let me tell you… Tuesday night I wrote so much my hand almost fell off! Canon J.John took a word that terrified me and broke it down into three main parts: praying, caring, and sharing. One of Canon J.John’s sayings that stuck out to me most is “a missionary is not one who crosses the seas, but one who sees the cross.”

Duke University Chorale Concert
Hosts Needed for One Night After Concert
Concert in the Church ~ Friday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m.
|
|
The Duke University Chorale is coming to St. Philip’s! Their March concert will feature a varied repertoire of both sacred and non-sacred pieces from many centuries, both unaccompanied and with other instruments.
Are you able to open your home to two or three of the students? Homes are needed on Friday, March 13, following the concert for about 40 students. Come to the concert, meet your students at the Ministries Hall (church office building), and then enjoy an evening together. They will have eaten dinner, but a snack would be greatly appreciated! Saturday morning, serve or get breakfast with your guests and take them back to the church.
Let’s show some St. Philip’s hospitality and share our love of God with these young people! Blue Devils, Tigers, Gamecocks, and yes, Tarheels are encouraged to volunteer.

Reunited: How Instagram Made a Family Whole Again
|
|
One day in late November, a staff member discovered a crab and a giraffe left behind in the Parlor. They were siblings––we could tell by the way they bickered with each other. We tried to find their home through Instagram, but no one came forward. Some weeks later, we tried again. Still no luck. Although they were doing well with us, clearly trying to be on their best behavior while finding ways to be helpful around the office, we knew they missed their family (and they themselves were surely missed!), so we tried one last time.
The third try was the charm! It turns out that the siblings had fallen out of a purse during a Foundations class, and a two-year-old boy (along with his baby brother and an older and wiser crab-giraffe pair) had been missing them very much. (The giraffe more so than the somewhat ornery crab, but the crab has promised to continue working on his behavior!) The family finally reunited this past Sunday, and it was a joyous occasion!

Register Your Child for Summer Camp at Camp St. Christopher!
|
|
About the camp (from stchristopher.org):
Our goal is for campers to return home with a better understanding of who they are as individuals created for a purpose within God’s plan. Our staff of well-trained, college-age, Christian leaders works to see campers’ lives formed by the power and truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
During the day, campers participate in activities such as hiking through our pristine maritime forest, sailing and kayaking in the estuary, team building, seining, rock climbing, games, and much more, along with daily chapel and small-group Bible study.
