For Grandparents: A Generations Ministry Event
Wednesday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall
|
|
Grandparents, following Wednesdays Alive! worship and supper tonight, join us to hear author Michael James Dowling speak to us about his new book,
Frog’s Rainy-Day Story and Other Fables, an ideal resource for grandparents.
We will also be hearing from the Rev. Brian McGreevy, who will share the Christian worldview and help guide us in using Dowling’s book to help our grandchildren navigate the culture in which we live.
Michael James Dowling has been writing professionally since 1999. He and his wife, artist and illustrator Sarah Buell Dowling, have three grown children and one grown grandchild.
|
|
The Rev. Brian McGreevy's "Screwtape Letters" class will be combined with this Generations Ministry event and will therefore meet in the Parish Hall instead of the Parlor (tonight only).

Recipe for a Christian Life
Reflections on Canon J.John's Sermon
by Denise C. Pickford
|
|
I love to cook. Browsing through recipes and then preparing them for my family and friends is one of my favorite things to do. To me, I am showing my love for them by taking the time to follow each step and make the preparations for a wonderful meal as my gift to them––and, of course, when my children were younger, to ensure their proper physical growth and health.
Is preparing nourishment in the form of food for our bodies any different from being nourished spiritually? We are not just a physical body; we have a spiritual body that must be fed as well. Without food and water, we would die. Without feeding our spiritual bodies or souls, we would become empty and begin searching for, in many instances, the wrong things to feed our hunger, which could never be satisfied with just earthly things. God wants to nourish our souls so that we may have the proper spiritual growth and health.
As I sat listening to Canon J.John on Sunday, his sermon struck me as the perfect “recipe” for how to live a Christian life!

Do you follow @stpyouth on Instagram? St. Philip's youth leaders inspire the next generation of St. Philippians (and our young friends and neighbors), and they can inspire YOU, too! Even if your kids have long since left home, or they're too young for youth group, or you're single or married without children, you will enjoy seeing what our youth are up to and what they're learning from our leaders. As you can see from last night's Instagram story, we can ALL benefit from what they have to share!

Water Mission’s 2019 At A Glance:
600,000 People Received Safe Water, 4,700 Walked for Water, and More
from watermission.org
|
|
Above, from the Water Mission website: Water Mission founders George and the late Molly Greene with their grandchildren at the 2019 Walk for Water in North Charleston, where more than 4,700 family members, coworkers, church groups, and dogs walked together to end the global water crisis. Below: The 2019 St. Philip’s Walk for Water team.
|
|
If you prayed, volunteered your time, gave a gift, or supported Water Mission in other ways throughout the past year, then you helped us serve more than 600,000 people with safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in 2019.
Together, we were the hands and feet of Christ. We…
- completed safe water projects in 182 communities and 20 countries,
- provided desperately needed safe water to survivors of natural disasters,
- traveled to rural areas around the world to install sustainable safe water and sanitation systems,
- and helped refugees fleeing violence and persecution.
We are so grateful for God’s blessings and your support this year. Before we turn the page on 2019, let’s look back at our work the past 12 months to help end the global water crisis.

About the camp (from stchristopher.org):
Our goal is for campers to return home with a better understanding of who they are as individuals created for a purpose within God’s plan. Our staff of well-trained, college-age, Christian leaders works to see campers’ lives formed by the power and truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
During the day, campers participate in activities such as hiking through our pristine maritime forest, sailing and kayaking in the estuary, team building, seining, rock climbing, games, and much more, along with daily chapel and small-group Bible study.

My St. Philip’s: Has your family been a part of St. Philip’s for generations or are you a newcomer (or somewhere in between)? Tell us about your experience in the parish.
