About Missions Sunday
St. Philip’s is honored to welcome back the Rt. Rev. Alden M. Hathaway as guest preacher at both services this Sunday and guest speaker at the Rector’s Forum, during which you will also hear from our World Missions Committee and our Home Missions Team, the people who prayerfully discern how we should best direct our focus on missions both at home and abroad. Bishop Hathaway served a 16-year tenure as Bishop of Pittsburgh, and he now serves as the Bishop in Residence of the Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort, SC.

Duke University Chorale Concert Has Been Cancelled
We are sorry to report that the Duke University Chorale concert that was scheduled for this Friday evening
has been cancelled amid the school's suspension of in-person classes and non-essential university-funded travel. Whatever your feelings about the outcome of
last Saturday's game are (or if you thought to yourself just now, "What game?"), we know you were looking forward to this concert, and we are sorry for the disappointment.

St. David Choir Marks 21st Consecutive
Year of Singing for the St. David Society
Last Thursday, March 5, our St. David Choir, which is composed of mixed voices 7th-grade and above, sang the Welsh national anthem and other Welsh pieces at a banquet for the St. David Society at the Carolina Yacht Club for the 21st consecutive year, the 13th with director Jolene Hethcox. Along with the rest of St. Philip’s children’s choirs, this dedicated group will also be singing during the 10:30 service this Sunday.

God Prepares the Called:
Volunteering at a New Home Missions Partner
by Elizabeth Scott
“There is no way I could relate to or be effective with clients here.” That was my initial reaction when I finally agreed to go in to volunteer at the Lowcountry Pregnancy Center.
After years of supporting them in other ways and then being encouraged to actually volunteer by a friend who had served on the board, I decided to answer that call with the idea that I could offer to do clerical volunteer services (a much needed offering). After an interview, when the director said she felt I was best suited to be trained as a volunteer counselor with the clients coming in for pregnancy testing and counseling, the above was my reaction.
My thoughts ran from “I know nothing about ‘that world’” to “How does one counsel someone with thoughts about abortion or who had had an abortion?” to “My world has been too sheltered to get into this.” As I was thinking these (now to me shameful) thoughts, the director was kindly and calmly explaining that they would train me thoroughly and walk beside me every step of the way.
I then recalled a phrase I’d first heard in Bible study fellowship: “God does not call the prepared. God prepares the called.” As I had always espoused those words, I decided I could no longer talk the words if I could not walk them.

March 21 is a Full Day for St. Philip’s!
Walk for Water and Parish Oyster Roast
St. Philippians, are you wondering how best to kick off the first weekend of spring? Allow us to plan your Saturday for you––we hope to see you at one or both events!
In the morning
Your morning activity will be the Walk for Water, which begins at 9:00 a.m. at Riverfront Park in North Charleston. Water Mission’s annual event is inspired by the burden that millions of women and children bear every day walking an average of 3.5 miles to collect water that’s not safe. While you’re raising funds and awareness for one of St. Philip’s World Mission partners, enjoy fellowship with clergy and parishioners.
Your afternoon/evening activity is the parish oyster roast from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. At this event graciously hosted by the Stuhr family at their home on Wadmalaw Island, we will have oysters, hot dogs, chili, and dessert––come solo or with a friend or the whole family and have some great food and fellowship! Tea, lemonade, and water will be provided.
Registration deadline is March 17, and the cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-12. Online registration is open at the link below, or you may sign up in person at the church office or following either service this Sunday, March 15.
The Stuhr Residence: 6862 Point Farm Rd., Wadmalaw Island

Haiti Annual Feast Day Mission
June 24-29, 2020
Info session: Sunday, March 22, at 12 noon in the Parlor
We recently celebrated our 25-year partnership with our sister church, St. Jean Baptiste on the island of La Gonâve, Haiti, and this summer we will once again journey to be with our brothers and sisters in Christ, offering them encouragement through our mission of presence during their annual feast day celebration. Is God calling you to be a part of this year’s team? We encourage anyone with interest or questions to join us for our information session following the 10:30 service on March 22 or to contact Gerry or Suzanne McCord.
I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. Psalm 57:9

New Offering for Parents of Older or Adult Children
Four Tuesdays beginning March 24 ~ 4:00-5:30 in the Parlor
Rob Rienow is the founder of Visionary Parenting, a ministry designed to be a guide for parents of younger children. At his seminars on Visionary Parenting, Rob kept hearing feedback from parents whose children were grown and out of the house, children who had abandoned their walk with the Lord and were not living in a fashion that displayed any trust in the Lord. In response to these cries for help from parents, Rob developed the Never Too Late program, which consists of four videos followed by prayer and discussion.
The videos develop the idea of restoring and/or developing relationships between parents and children, parents and God, and children and God. Rob’s biblically-based theses develop four steps for participants to take: (1) turn your heart to the Lord; (2) turn your heart to your child; (3) draw your child’s heart to yours; and (4) point your child’s heart to Christ.
As part of this teaching series, we intend to have prayer ministers present at sessions 2, 3, and 4 for individual prayer with the participants about whatever God puts on their hearts after viewing the videos.

Ministry Opportunity in the Church Office
Does your heart jump with eager anticipation when you hear a phone ring? Do you long to utter the words, “Please hold while I transfer you”? Are you curious about what St. Philip’s is like during the week? Consider volunteering for a one-hour shift at the front desk! Front desk volunteers answer the phone, greet people who come to meet with clergy or staff with a warm St. Philip’s welcome, and partake of all the yummy St. Philip’s coffee they could ever want. And there are usually plenty of goodies left over from Bible studies or Wednesday night dinners to munch on.
