Boost Your Hiring Efforts with the Employee Referral Program!

Office of Human Resources

Did you know that over 30% of new staff hires who have joined the CMU team FY25 to date came from employee referrals? However, only a small portion of these hires were for positions enrolled in CMU’s Employee Referral Program (ERP) — which means many successful referrals weren’t eligible for a monetary reward. By enrolling your open positions in the ERP, you can tap into one of our strongest hiring pipelines while recognizing employees for their efforts in bringing top talent to CMU!

Why Enroll Your Positions

  • Expand Your Talent Pool – Employee referrals bring in high-quality candidates who are often a strong fit for CMU’s culture and work environment.
  • Increase Employee Engagement – Encouraging referrals allows staff to play an active role in building their teams, leading to stronger team connections and investment in new hires.
  • Recognize and Reward Employees – The ERP offers cash incentives between $500 and $1,500 to thank eligible staff members for their contributions to hiring efforts.

How to Enroll a Position

  1. Identify a qualifying staff role that could benefit from the ERP.
  2. Work with your HR recruiter to confirm eligibility and enroll the position.
  3. Encourage your team to share the opportunity and refer candidates through Workday.

By leveraging the ERP, you enhance your hiring strategy while helping build a stronger workforce. Don’t let great referrals go unrewarded! Learn more about enrolling positions on the Employee Referral Program webpage or reach out to your HR recruiter today.

Shaping Futures: Celebrating Black & Afro-Latinx Resilience

LFSA, Sankofa, CFA and MCS

To honor Black History Month, the Latine Faculty and Staff Alliance (LFSA), Sankofa – Black Faculty and Staff Alliance, the College of Fine Arts (CFA), and the Mellon College of Science (MCS) came together to host Shaping Futures: A Networking Lunch Celebrating Black & Afro-Latinx Resilience on February 6th in the Alumni Concert Hall at CFA. The event marked a first-ever collaboration between CMU Employee Resource Groups and Colleges.

The gathering showcased the rich culture and artistry of Afro-Latinx communities with vibrant decorations supplied by Ujamaa Collective, a local nonprofit organization that supports Africana artisans. It offered a welcoming space for networking and connection-building among Black and Afro-Latinx students, faculty, and staff. Attendees were even treated to a spectacular performance by Zuly Inirio, an Afro-Dominican opera singer who has led the Afro-Latinx Song & Opera Project

If you missed the event, be sure to mark your calendar for March 20th – World Storytelling Day. On this day, all the Employee Resource Groups will hold an event to share stories that reinforce the cultural importance of oral storytelling. Stay tuned for more details!

Staff Benefits Survey Wrap-Up

The Benefits Committee has reviewed your survey feedback and identified key focus areas for the coming year. Here’s what we’re working on:

  • Community Service Opportunities – Exploring ways for staff to participate in volunteer and community service projects during work hours without using PTO.
  • Health Insurance and Prescription Plans – Addressing concerns about high costs and limited prescription plan choices to explore more affordable and flexible options.
  • Extended Tuition Coverage – Advocating for tuition benefits to extend beyond CMU, including part-time enrollment for dependents, making higher education more accessible.
  • Expanding Optional Benefits – Based on staff interest, we are exploring new optional benefits such as Long-Term Care, Cancer Coverage, Critical Illness, and Pet Insurance.

These are just a few of the priorities identified. You can review the full survey results. Staff Council and the Benefits Committee remain committed to working with University Leadership to ensure your benefit needs are heard and addressed.
