Scotty Strong Self-Defense Program

Carnegie Mellon Police Department

Staff Council At-Large Representative Mark Villasenor oversees the Scotty Strong Self-Defense Program as part of his role as the Sergeant of the Carnegie Mellon Police Department (CMUPD) Community Resource Unit and personally spearheaded the initiative.

Scotty Strong Self-Defense Program

The Scotty Strong Self-Defense program at CMU is a FREE two-hour self-defense class open to the entire CMU community, including students, faculty and staff. The Scotty Strong Team consists of CMU Police Department (CMUPD) officers who are certified in various self-defense disciplines. They teach situational awareness and provide effective techniques to enhance personal safety.

The mission of Scotty Strong is to create an inclusive environment and empower individuals through self-defense training that emphasizes safety and risk-reduction strategies for everyone.

Scotty Strong Self-Defense classes are offered monthly and are available for your department, organization or student group on campus. This is a fun opportunity to learn self-defense alongside our colleagues! You can also sign up for the next available class and participate with other members of the CMU community.

CMUPD Community Resource Unit

The CMUPD Community Resource Unit offers the Citizens Police Academy every fall. CMUPD also hosts the Special Olympics Spring Sectional Games on campus in April, sponsors a Christmas Toy Drive in December and picks up litter on our designated route for the Adopt-A-Highway Program that CMU Staff Council members can be involved in.

The Community Resource Unit can also provide a FREE Security Assessment of your office or building and also FREE Active Shooter Training (Run, Hide and Fight).

To learn more about Scotty Strong and register, check out the CMUPD’s Self-Defense Course page or contact Scotty Strong Lead Instructor, Detective Sarah Adams, for more details on the program.

University Libraries Workshops

Carnegie Mellon University Libraries

Each semester, the Libraries offers an extensive selection of workshops designed to help attendees learn a new skill, deepen their understanding of a specific topic or gain exposure to an unfamiliar technology, tool or technique. These are taught by experts from across the Libraries and range in subject from coding and data visualization to spatial literacy using maps to tips for academic publishing.

Whether you’re looking to experiment with a new programming language like R, create a unique website with GitPages, craft a business plan for your venture into arts entrepreneurship or just take a moment to connect your breath, body and mind after a busy week, the Libraries' slate of workshops this spring has something for everyone on campus.

The workshops are free of charge and open to CMU students, staff, faculty and alumni. Seating is limited and registration is required. For a full list of Spring 2025 workshops, you can visit the Libraries’ Workshop Calendar.
