Our thoughts are with all those who have suffered as a result of the recent events in Boston, and our thanks are with everyone who reached out to help those in the community who needed it most. You are our everyday heroes.
Greetings!

Despite the difficult recent events here in Boston, we hope this edition of the Starfish Spotlight finds you beginning to enjoy warmer weather and the first of the Spring flowers.

Spring is always an exciting time at Starfish, because it turns into summer, of course, and also because we get very busy with our second-favorite activity of the year: getting camp ready for the kids! We hope you will join us as a spring volunteer or a summer visitor...and you can find out more about these opportunities below.

In this edition of the Spotlight:
  • Starfish mentioned in the Boston Globe Magazine!
  • Well Wishes and Welcomes
  • Family Camp Registration is Open!
  • Volunteer Work Day - We need YOUR help!
  • Save-the-date for the Summer Snack-n-Sing
We hope to hear from you (and hopefully see you) soon!

Smiles from the Campfire,

From the March 24, 2013 Letters to the Editor section:

"After reading "10 Questions to Ask When You're Choosing a Summer Camp" (March 3), I was disappointed to see that no camps were listed for children with special needs. In the summer of 2012 my daughter started working at Camp Starfish in Rindge, New Hampshire, where children get the attention they need around the clock. I think anyone struggling with a child who has special needs would be happy to know that there are options for them, too."

Karen LeBlanc / Everett

A big thank you to Karen for letting all the struggling families out there
know that Starfish offers their children a safe place full of fun and support!

Karen's daughter, Rachel, is joining the Starfish Staff for her 2nd summer

in 2013. Last year, Rachel was a group counselor and one of five staff

who supervised the Beachcombers adventure trip program.

This summer, she will be a Lead Counselor.

Is somebody singing our praises?
Please e-mail links to any Camp Starfish articles or reviews you may find - we'd love to see!
Or, if YOU want to sing our praises, we highly encourage that! Sing away! :)

Well Wishes and Welcomes - Year-Round Staff Changes

We've got bittersweet goodbyes to say and happy welcomes to offer! Over the past few months, Starfish's year-round team has had a big transition! These three ladies are all Shining Stars who help Starfish to be the best it can be:

Michelle (at left) with summer camp Administrators Kaylen and Jess.

As our Associate Director since 2006, Michelle Cyr has managed our camper intake and enrollment process, overseen staff hiring, conducted more than 24 weeks of staff training, supervised six administrator teams, provided    significant behavior support to over 700 campers, and supported over 400 summer staff! She has recently transitioned into a consultancy role with Starfish and accepted a full-time job as a Clinician for the Preschool Outreach Program at the Home for Little Wanderers, a highly respected child and family service organization. She will be missed as a year-round presence at Starfish for sure, though you will still see Michelle at camp from time to time during the summer, and she is always happy to hear from Starfish campers, families, and friends through email to michelle@camsptarfish.org.

Also heading off to a wonderful new opportunity is our long-time office/development manager and family/agency liaison, Jill Connell. Jill started in 2006 as an office assistant, became an integral part of our fundraising team, and most recently held the role of External Development Manager in which she took such great care of the families, agency contacts, donors, and friends of Starfish. Jill recently began her new job as an Associate Director of Institutional Advancement at the Y, where she is working hard in fundraising and community organizing. Jill has "warned" us that we'll still be seeing plenty of her and her son, Logan...and we wouldn't have it any other way!

We wish both Michelle and Jill plenty of success in their new roles, and thank them both for their ongoing guidance  and friendship to Starfish, especially for everything they did during their transitions to make sure our  new Administrative Assistant, Deana Stephens, was able to hit the ground running as she joined our year-round team! If you've called the office recently, you may have already met Deana, who has quickly become a key member of our team as she supports the campers, families, staff and agency contacts who are getting ready for camp in just a few weeks! If you haven't yet had the chance, we encourage you to call our office or send deana@campstarfish.org a welcome email and introduce yourself!

Deana, in addition to her other talents, is also lending her considerable gardening skill to helping us get a jump on the planting of the Safe Memorial Garden. At right, she's watering our indoor greenhouse full of little (soon to be big) sproutings of beans, watermelons, corn, herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, and so much more! This summer, we're pretty sure you'll find her in the Garden when she's not at her desk!
