Beautiful Plants and Inspired Designs since 1954

We will be closed on Nov. 28 for Thanksgiving

Dear Friends of Anderson's La Costa,

Happy Thanksgiving!

November is a very special month. It is a month of huge transitions. We transition from fall into winter, from mild days to the extremes of Santa Anas and chilly nights, from daylight saving to shorter days of standard time, and from pumpkins to poinsettias. Thank you for visiting us as we experience the change of seasons together. We appreciate you and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends.

All Grevillea and Leucadendron

Australian Grevillea are drought-tolerant and have showy flowers that attract bees and hummingbirds. A benefit of having Grevilleas mixed into your landscape, other than their absolute beauty, is the diversity of blooming seasons they offer since they come into their peak bloom during fall and wintertime.

Leucadendron are native to South Africa and instead of having showy blooms, they have showy foliage that reaches towards the sky. Brilliant colors of red, orange, or interesting variegation can be mixed into any low-water garden.

Poinsettias, Bulbs & Wreaths for the Holidays...

We are excited to bring you our annual holiday merchandise! Our first batch of gorgeous poinsettias has already arrived. Beautiful orange, yellow, mixed color and the classic red poinsettias and Princettias are in and are looking amazing! You will also find Christmas cactus, orchids and anthuriums in the indoor greenhouse - all ready for holiday gift giving and decorating.

Paperwhite and Amaryllis bulbs (Ferrari Red, Minerva and White Christmas) are stocked and ready for you.

Holiday greenery like wreaths and garland are arriving this Tuesday (yes, before Thanksgiving!), plus tillandsia ornaments are already dancing on their display tree. We are happy to special order additional wreaths and evergreen garland for you- just let us know with a minimum of one week to spare.

We have updated our Garden Gift Shop with a huge selection of Woodstock Windchimes, gifts and greeting cards by talented local artists, bird feeders and supplies, whimsical animal statuary, San Diego Hat Company hats, and yes, Anderson's La Costa T-shirts!

We hope you are enjoying our beautiful, clear fall. Wishing you a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. We look forward to seeing you very soon.

Warmest regards,

Your Anderson's La Costa Team ~

Marc, Mariah, Steven, Manny, Hanna, Tandy, June, Courtney, Julie, Madeline, and Devon

November Gardening Tips

November can bring glorious weather for gardening in the San Diego area. Warm but mild days and cool nights are ideal growing conditions for cool-season plants. Working in the garden is usually a very pleasant and rewarding experience this month.

If you haven't already done so, November is a particularly good time to add trees, shrubs and ground covers to your landscape. November can sometimes deliver much needed rain in Southern California as it is possible to receive up to 10% of our rainfall in November or early December. It's a great time to prune dense trees and make sure newly planted trees are well-staked before the winter arrives.

Here in California, we have an amazing selection of native and drought tolerant plants that are often still under-utilized in landscapes. If you want to add some low water beauty to your garden, now is a great time to plant natives. Remember, even drought tolerant plants need watering when getting established so don’t neglect them thinking they are good to go once you plant them!
