Dear Neighbors:
The City of Kettering is currently accepting nominations for one of my favorite initiatives--the Mayor’s Award for Volunteer Service. The purpose of this award is to honor outstanding volunteers who are making valuable contributions to the community through volunteer service in a wide variety of categories, such as health, recreation, arts, environment, education, public safety, civic service or other human services.
To be qualified to receive this most prestigious award, volunteers need to either reside in Kettering, or the majority of their volunteer work must be performed in Kettering. The volunteer activity can be in a structured setting or on an informal basis. Groups are eligible as well.
All nominations will be reviewed by the Kettering Volunteer Advisory Council. One adult volunteer and one youth volunteer age 12 to 18, will be selected to receive the award. I will present the awards at a City Council meeting in April as part of the City’s observance of National Volunteer Week.
If you would like to nominate an eligible volunteer, please visit https://www.ketteringoh.org/mayors-award/ to complete a nomination form. Or contact the City of Kettering Volunteer Office at 937-296-2531 to obtain a nomination form.
Nominations must be received by March 10 to be considered for this year’s award.

February is Black History Month, and the City of Kettering’s Board of Community Relations encourages you to take time to focus on the rich, complex history of African American struggle, achievement and contribution to all aspects of American life.
When the first “Negro History Week” was celebrated in 1926, African American history already extended back more than 300 years. Originally celebrated the second week of February (to coincide with the birthdates of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass), it was expanded and nationally recognized as Black History Month in 1976.

RESOLVE TO GET INVOLVED IN 2023
|
|
Many of us choose New Year’s resolutions focused on self-improvement. Research shows that among many benefits, volunteering is great for increasing confidence and physical health while also decreasing depression. Knowing you are helping others can also give you a boost in happiness by as much as 12%! If you like the sound of all this, keep reading!
For those of you that love music, engaging with people, and have evenings open this summer, you may want to consider helping at Fraze Pavilion. Volunteers greet guests with a warm smile, help direct guests, and assist with check in. The Fraze has a full season of great entertainment lined up – what a great way to spend a summer evening!
Perhaps you enjoy working with youth, or have a teenager at home looking for fun ways to earn service hours while also mentoring younger students? Working with children at Kettering summer camps are a great option! Rosewood Arts Center provides a creative environment to help children explore the world of the arts through dance, theater, drawing and more. Camp assistants at the Habitat Environmental Center allow volunteers to experience nature and the outdoors. The Kettering Recreation Center has a variety of traditional, sports, and specialty themed camps for many ages. Camps run all summer, and volunteers need to be at least 16 years of age, although some camps allow volunteers to be 14.
If you’re looking for more flexible options with your schedule, our award winning Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Department hosts a multitude of family-oriented activities and special events that take place weekends and evenings. Or, our Conservation Team of volunteers care for gardens, observe bird boxes, and participate in park clean-ups when it’s convenient for them. These events and activities serve as a perfect opportunity for groups looking for ways to give back to our community!

GET READY FOR SUMMER CAMP 2023!
|
|
There might be a chill in the air, but we’re already thinking summer! We admit to having a favorite season, but we think we’re justified because we have so much going on in the warmer months.
Kettering summer camps are full of opportunities for growth, discovery, self-esteem building and good old-fashioned play!
Camp Rosewood features week-long camps including Dance, Anime and Manga, Wheel Pottery, Theater and many more! Camp Rosewood and Camp Habitat also collaborate to bring you Art in the Wild, a camp focused on the intersection between art and environmental education.
Our Recreation Camps, which include traditional and specialty camps focus on play! This year, campers will have a blast with their friends as they make lifelong memories.
Habitat summer camps are exciting, educational and filled with hands-on experiences for young adventurers. Campers learn about the Earth, science and nature while exploring the great outdoors. This year’s camps include fan-favorite CSI Camp, the chance to explore careers in natural resource management and learn the (literal) ropes of going camping.
Keep your child active this summer in our Sports Camps. Campers will learn new skills, build on existing skills and focus on teamwork as we keep them moving during summer break. Specialized camps are available for individual sports or your child can choose a favorite in Sports Fun Camp.
As always, our goal is to provide a camp for every kid and to help our community’s youth enjoy their safest, happiest summer yet. 2023 summer camp registration begins on Monday, March 6 for Kettering residents and Monday, March 13 for non-residents.
