The Stations tell a Story
One of the reasons I love the Stations of the Cross is that they tell a story. Drawing both from gospel accounts and pious traditions and legend, they create a narrative of Jesus’ passion in rich detail and with compelling “characters.” There is, of course, Jesus, but also Pilate, Mary, Simon of Cyrene, and Veronica. There are the weeping women of Jerusalem, Joseph of Arimathea, and even “they” who divided Jesus’ garments and cast lots for them.
What a gift the Stations are to offer us so many entry points into the story of Jesus’ last days on earth. Are you among the weeping women of Jerusalem? Veronica, who wipes the face of Jesus, making him recognizable again? Or are you Simon of Cyrene, on whom the cross is laid? Or are you Mary, weeping at the foot of the cross in horror and despair at the fate of her beloved child? Perhaps you feel like a passerby catching only a glimpse of the brouhaha in the street, hurrying to get to your next appointment. Or do you feel like Jesus, bearing a burden, kicked while you’re down, laughed at, dismissed?
This Lent, have the opportunity to pray the Stations every Friday at noon in the church, accompanied by the organ. After conversation among staff and parish leadership, we’ve opted not to livestream this year. If you prefer to pray the stations from home, the national church has compiled a list of ways to pray the stations online that includes a variety of options (click here for that list). If you're not able to get to Ascension, I encourage you to explore options at nearby churches in your neighborhood and consider this an opportunity to get to know more about how others, even other denominations, engage this holy practice.
But if it’s the images and music of Ascension that you’re craving, I do hope you’ll be able to join us in the church during Lent. If you’re unable, our parish admin, Br. Nathanael, has compiled a PDF of the service bulletin that does have smaller images of the Stations found in the church for you to meditate on.

An Update On Interim and Rector Search
We have said our farewells to Fr. Raymond and have done it in the grand and unique way that only Ascension can! For that you have our most grateful thanks, and the gratitude of Fr. Raymond as well. It took our entire parish family to make it possible: the musicians, the kitchen crew, the volunteers who provided food, and those who set up and cleaned up.
Now we shift our focus to hiring an interim rector. We have been following a number of leads brought to us by fellow parishioners, friends of Ascension, and the diocese. We continue to make progress and will continue to keep you updated as our work continues.
It is also time to begin assembling a rector search committee. We have assembled names and are meeting to select members to serve on this important committee. We expect to have a committee of approximately seven members and look forward to presenting a panel to the parish within the next couple of weeks.
Please keep the vestry, the wardens, and the candidates for the rector search committee in your prayers as we prepare for the future of the Church of the Ascension. We cannot look to our future without recognizing our past, and yet we must allow ourselves to evolve into the next phase of our growth with faith and with prayer.

Coffee Hour Returns!
The entire church benefits from our gathering for fellowship following our worship together, and it is thanks to coffee hour hosts that we have food and coffee with which to celebrate our time together. We need hosts on Sundays after both the 9 and 11 am masses. Please contact Vestry member Seán Hansen to let him know your willingness and ability to serve.

Outreach Committee Meeting March 16
Next Wednesday, March 16, at 5 p.m., the Outreach Committee will meet on Zoom. This committee is in its nascent stages as we are assessing the ways in which Ascension can best reach out to and serve our neighbors here in the immediate area and across the city. All are welcome. Please contact Mtr. Murphy-Gill with questions.
