Spotlight on Alana Dunlap

Alana Dunlap

By Alana Dunlap, Student Life Coordinator

I grew up in a small town not too far from here: Mayodan, NC, so I have always been a small town girl at heart. I got my Associate in Science from Rockingham Community College before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where I got my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Gender Studies. I have a deep passion for understanding social dynamics and evaluating the needs and concerns of students from diverse backgrounds. My hope is that I am able to provide a nurturing and welcoming environment for all students. I have been at Davidson-Davie for about 10 months! I have a cat named Jinji (named after the song "My Jinji" by Sunset Rollercoaster). I love reading, writing, yoga, and am currently learning how to crochet!

  • Travel: I am not much of a traveler, though I would like to be, but my favorite place I have visited is Annapolis, Maryland! I love a walkable city. I would love to travel to Switzerland one day!
  • Music: I’m on a big rock kick right now, listening to a lot of The Cure, Deftones, The Strokes, and Radiohead.
  • Food: I LOVE sushi, poke, and curry!
  • Movies & Shows: I am currently watching Severance on Apple TV and highly recommend it if you like to be shocked or bewildered. I absolutely love psychological thrillers and science fiction. Some of my favorite movies are The Shining, The Babadook, and Alien.
  • What feels like home? To me, home feels like being surrounded by people who nurture your growth and encourage you to be a better person! It's a place where your authentic self is celebrated, accepted, and cherished without judgment.
  • Favorite thing about myself: My favorite thing about myself is my strong sense of identity and confidence because it took a great deal of self-reflection and commitment to self-compassion to get to this point. I am proud of myself for overcoming the challenges that taught me the value of staying true to who I am.

Decorative

💡Did you know💡 – in Irish, we express emotions differently than in English? In the English language when someone says ‘I am sad’, the person becomes the emotion, in Irish we say ‘sadness is on me – tá brón orm’ implying that the person does not identify with the emotion fully. I am not sad; the emotion is simply on me for a while. I am not defined by an emotion, and something else will be on me another time. An emotion is not permanent but instead comes and goes as fluidly as waves on the shoreline.

When we say ‘hello’, we say ‘God to you - Dia duit’, when we say ‘goodbye’ we say ‘be safe - slán’, and when we say ‘thank you very much’ we say ‘may you have a thousand goodnesses - go raibh míle maith agat’.

Whether you have traced your roots to a small village in County Kerry or can just about point Ireland out on the world map – this class is all about learning, understanding, and connecting with the land of ‘céad mile fáilte’ - ‘a hundred thousand welcomes’.

Come and join us as we explore a variety of subjects from ancient traditions to modern-day culture and you’ll be the person on St. Patrick’s Day being able to share the ‘Did you know’ Irish Facts!☘️
