It's rare for a legislator to enter elected office and immediately take the lead on a critical issue. Dr. Maxine Dexter, however, has done just that. We’re proud to be a support to her as she pushes for the most effective policies possible.
In 2019, NCA put forth, with 21 allies, a petition to the State's Environmental Quality Commission, pushing it to begin rule-making to regulate off road sources of diesel. They turned it down, citing the need for more study. Yet this study was released just weeks later, showing the severe need for effective policy. Still, the EQC did nothing.
In 2020, after only months on the job, Dr. Dexter tried to do what the EQC would not. She sponsored HB 2814, a legislative route towards the needed regulations on off-road equipment. NCA stood side by side with her, informing our communities and other legislators about the health impacts, the regulatory options, the effects on underserved communities and more.
Still, at the end of the day, Oregon once again failed to take any significant action towards protecting us all from the effects of diesel pollution. We nonetheless deeply appreciate Dr. Dexter showing leadership when so few others would – both NCA and she are persistent and we won’t rest until the state takes decisive steps against diesel pollution.
