The Story of Jane DeMauro
A Cornea Tissue Recipient
Jane DeMauro is the Director of Perinatal Care at Bayfront Health Baby Place. She has been a nurse for over 30 years and has a passion for maternal psychiatric care. She is also a bilateral cornea transplant recipient.

Many years ago, Jane went in for a Lasik consultation and discovered her underlying eye disease when the doctor ruled her out for the procedure. Jane has Fuchs’ Dystrophy, a condition which causes fluid to build up in a person’s cornea, causing it to swell and thicken. Several members of Jane’s family have also suffered from this form of visual impairment.

“My eyes would get tired and I would have to take breaks and rest from the computer. It impacted my embroidery, crocheting… I was struggling to read.” – Jane DeMauro, Corneal Transplant Recipient

Jane needed a cornea transplant in each of her eyes to alleviate her vision problems. She worked with her surgeon, Dr. Lahners to develop a plan and she had her first transplant in July 2019 and her second in December of 2019. She was also able to have her cataracts treated as well.

When asked how she felt about having her vision restored, Jane said:

“It’s hard to describe. The alternative would’ve been that I would’ve probably not been able to drive and do anything. These wonderful people who donate their organs and wonderful surgeons that do this work… it’s very emotional and such a wonderful sacrifice.”
