The Story of Jordan Joiner
A Donor Family Story
Even before she was born, Jordan Joiner spent a lot of time with doctors. Through a difficult pregnancy, Jordan’s mother, Eva thought of her as a miracle. After her birth, Jordan struggled with her health due to a rare genetic condition. However, this never impacted her spirit.

Jordan was incredibly kind with a curious mind. Once, a boy in Jordan’s class told her that he didn’t like her. She asked her mother, “Is it okay if I love him anyway? Because he just doesn’t understand. Sometimes people don’t understand others.” Her compassion and empathy were extraordinary.

Jordan was exceptionally smart. She would spend hours researching the information that the doctors would share with her about her condition. Jordan wanted to understand her illness and the treatments she received. She wanted to be involved in the decision-making around her health.

Jordan and her family knew that Jordan’s life would likely not be as long as it should be. She was 14 when she passed away. Her family felt passionate about the greater impact of research through their own experience related to Jordan’s condition. When Lions Eye Institute called, it made sense for them to consent to donate her corneas for sight-saving research.

When asked how Jordan would feel about her gift, Eva said, “She would be proud. She can help everybody… it is worldwide. It gave me so much peace. [Jordan] always [wanted] to help somebody and take the pain away. [She] always [wanted] to give more.”

Jordan was a very special person. Though her time with her family was brief, she brought so much light to their lives. Jordan will continue to bring light to others for years to come through her donation.
