We have had a very busy week at The Streetly Academy; we remembered those lost in war, some students have taken mock exams, and others have visited the GSUS Live bus.
We also have many students out today at The Skills Show.
Please take the time to read the articles below as there is some very good advice for supporting your child with their learning.

SpaG Hotti - cook some up with your child!

Streetly is really bubbling away on our SPaG Hotti programme!  The emphasis on accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar, in a growing number of GCSE examinations in all subjects, means our students have to develop and use these skills to reach their best grades.

Alongside our drive to encourage daily independent reading, we now teach a focus of SPaG in English and all teachers, in every subject, are monitoring this use. This half term they are also serving up a regular plate of SPag Hotti, reminding students to use it accurately in their lessons.

Last half term we explicitly taught accurate use of apostrophes and capital letters. This now becomes 'zero tolerance' and your child may be asked to rewrite some or even all of their work if there are multiple errors.

Please support your child by checking their homework in ALL subjects for the accurate use of apostrophes and capital letters. To help you do this, the presentations used it class can be found by clicking here for apostrophes, and here for capital lettersAnything you can do to help your child to become great readers and writers will make them more successful.

DID YOU KNOW.......

Reading is the single most important thing your child can do to be successful. It is so important that at Streetly we expect ALL students to read for at least 15 minutes every night and at KS4 and 5 this should be considerably more.

Students should read a wide range of texts - but they should always develop their vocabulary and be a little challenging.

By clicking here, you will find a presentation which will give you some surprising facts about how far reading really can affect the lives of your child.
Take a few minutes to look at it and please encourage your child to read.

(Please note that the presentations are interactive, therefore they will open in Power Point.)

Year 9 Options
This year is an important one for our Y9 students as they start to plan their future pathways. Part of this process is choosing their options and I will be leading an initial assembly on Wednesday 19th November with Y9, to enable them to start thinking about possible choices for the future.

At the end of November / start of December they will be completing a short survey in ICT lessons where we will be asking them what their possible choices might be. This is not their final option choice but it does give them an idea of what options they might want to take. We find it very helpful in case there are any issues with the options blocks and we often reassess the blocks after this survey.

In January, Y9 students will receive guidance from tutors and class teachers and the options booklet will be available on line for both students and parents to see.

GSUS Live
The RE department have had the GSUS Live mobile classroom with them all week.  Most students have had the chance to explore the themes of forgiveness, fear and rejection using some of the latest technology. A big thanks to our local volunteers from Birmingham City Mission, Elim Life Church, Kingstanding and Streetly Evangelical Church for leading these sessions.
Girls' 5-a-Side Team
We saw an amazingly dominant performance this week from the Year 9 and 10 Girls' 5-a-side Football Team at The Aston Villa Community Girl's Football Tournament.
They scored 43 goals and only conceded 1, finishing as overall winners!

The girls played 7 games and results were: 4-0, 6-0, 4-1, 12-0, 12-0, 1-0, 4-0.

Well done to all players!

Remembering the Fallen
We had a very moving two minute silence this week, remembering those who lost their lives in war.
Mr Cumming played a very emotional 'Last Post'. It was wonderful to see such respect from our students.

Alton Towers Reward Trip
200 students enjoyed a very wet reward trip to Alton Towers last weekend, with a day in the park, followed by a fireworks display.
Many thanks to the staff who accompanied the students.
