West Branch Sugar River, Mt. Vernon Creek and USRWA featured in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Brown Trout caught in Mt. Vernon Creek

The Upper Sugar River Watershed boasts something quite rare in the world of angling; an exceptional water resource adjacent to a major urban area.

Many anglers in the Madison area are unaware of the opportunities that exist so close to home in places like West Branch Sugar River and Mt. Vernon Creek. Class 1 and Class 2 trout streams weave around the same watershed that covers the southwest side of Madison, Fitchburg and Verona. This caught the attention of Paul A. Smith, Outdoors Editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who first discovered the Upper Sugar River Watershed in a March 2009 article highlighting the major restoration work that had taken place on the West Branch.

Six years later, Smith takes a look back at the work that was done, the great fishing opportunities in the watershed, and a look ahead at future challenges to the West Branch and Mt. Vernon Creek. Thank you to former USRWA President Steve Haak, Paul A. Smith, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for bringing attention to the watershed.

Youth Education in the Watershed

USRWA is currently working on details for two youth education opportunities this spring in the watershed.

In April, children from the East Madison Community Center will take a field trip to the Sugar River and participate in a 90 minute program USRWA is developing. Many of these children do not get a chance to interact with natural areas very often, which makes this experience important and hopefully lots of fun. Thanks to the Dane County Office of Lakes & Watersheds for helping to coordinate this day.

In June, USRWA is partnering with New Century School in Verona to provide a day on the Sugar River just before summer vacation. Students will get hands-on experience with water quality sampling, invasive species and canoeing the river.
