Busy time of year at YPL

Watch our website and the outdoor street sign for upcoming events.

By Dinah Wolff, President

As we move into June, the activity level at our library is ramping up. It's a busy time of the year - we'll have an increase in visitors and circulation, and will soon be organizing our annual Summer Book & Plant Sale, publicized elsewhere in this newsletter.

Duncan Oliver and John Shea, Co-chairs of the Program Committee, have brought us a number of interesting and well-attended events in recent months, among them a Taylor Bray Farm Archaeology Project update, a program about Sailors' Valentines, and an informative public service presentation by CapeSave. Watch our website and the outdoor street sign for upcoming events, like our next program on Fraud and Scam Awareness, scheduled for June 8th.

Lynn Lesperance continues to offer special children's programming and drop-in programs. The popular monthly Book Club led by Leslie Altman will meet in June and then take a respite until September. My knitting group, which meets, on first and third Mondays of the month (other needleworkers welcome), will also resume in September.

A few words about our Book Sale donations: nowadays, many people read on devices instead of purchasing their reading in book form, which leads to fewer donations of current and appealing books. Our annual Book Sale is always well-attended, but its success is dependent upon our receiving donations of books that will attract buyers; for example, certain non-fiction needs to be fairly up-to-date and relevant to today's life style. We truly appreciate your donations to our Book Sale, but please help our volunteers by taking a moment to look them over first for condition and age.

Library Receives Grant for Window Replacement

We will retain the historic nature of the building but have
operable windows that are guaranteed for 20 years.

By Ann Petrou, Vice President

The Yarmouth Port Library Association would like to thank the voters of Yarmouth for their support at the Town Meeting on May 5th of our grant request for Community Preservation funds to replace all of the windows in our library.

We also thank Mike Barry from the town; Gary Ellis, the chair of the Community Preservation Committee, and all of the members of that committee for their help and support. The Selectmen and Finance Committee also backed the YPL 100% for which we are most appreciative.

The project began over a year ago and involved hours of planning by the Trustees and the Building and Grounds Committee of the YPL. Consultation with officials of the town and with contractors has resulted, we feel, in the best decision for the YPL.

We will be using Renewal by Andersen for the windows. As they replace each window, they will add insulation where needed and new trim around the windows. There are certain windows that have to be replaced with safety glass to bring them up to code, including the large window in the Children's Room.

We will retain the historic nature of the building but have operable windows that are guaranteed for 20 years. We are anticipating late July/early August for the job to be undertaken. The windows have to be manufactured to our needs. All this with what we hope to be no interruption of services for our patrons! That is most important.

Book & Plant Donations (& Help) Needed for                   Annual Book & Plant Sale on Saturday, July 7th!

BOOKS:
Please DONATE your used books to the library
for our annual Book Sale.
Book donations will be accepted until June 23rd, only during library open hours.

Some new 2018 titles can also supplement our library collection.

We accept adult fiction and nonfiction, children's books,
gardening books, etc.

We cannot accept textbooks, encyclopedias or videotapes. The more recent the publishing date the better for resale. This is especially true for diet, medical, and self-help books. People want to see current information. Books must be clean and free of dust and mildew. Because of limited space, please call ahead if you have large numbers of books.

PLANTS:
Named and labeled sun or shade.

Delivered to the library July 5th or 6th.
Help to beautify more Yarmouth Port gardens!

Gently used gardening items - tools, planters, decor, etc.
will also be accepted for resale.

Call Sally Hockenbury at (508) 362-6045 if you need help digging up your plants.

HELP:

Annual Bulb Sale - Benefits the library

Think bulbs - In time for fall planting.

Throughout this spring and summer, we'll be conducting our Annual Bulb Sale, a fundraiser which benefits the library and provides a great deal of convenience to you, our potential buyers.

Fifty percent of every sale we make goes toward our Operating Budget, with your selection sent directly to your home in time for fall planting.

Watch for our volunteers in a few weeks - we'll be at a table near the circulation desk, and will also be selling at the July 7th Book & Plant Sale.

YPL - The go-to place for summer family-fun!

Check-out what YPL offers this summer!

By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian

They say summer is coming. The temperatures seem to disagree but the beautiful lilacs and violets give me great hope. Summer here at the library means a lot more visitors and a lot more fun. We're really looking forward to re-connecting with old friends and making new ones.

I'm planning two very special events for families this year. On Wednesday, July 18th at 2 PM Amy Tavares from Rainforest Reptile Shows will be back once again to amaze and delight us. She brings lots of interesting animals and there will be plenty of "hands-on" opportunities.

On Saturday, August 18th at 10:30 AM Julie Stepanek will be here. Do you play the ukulele? Do you wish you did? Want to give it a try and have a fun, family musical experience at the same time? Julie brings her stories, songs, and ukuleles, all the ingredients for a rollicking good time and she works with all ages. Even very young children are invited, so bring the whole family. If you have a ukulele, bring it along. If not, we'll have some for you to try. Both of these programs are free but space is limited so, please, reserve your place in advance.

In addition we will have weekly drop-in programs: Lego's, games, crafts, visits with the Therapy Dogs, and more. Check our website for more information.

Are you getting the most from your library?

By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian

Greetings of the season! Are you getting the most from your library? One product  CLAMS buys with our fees is Novelist Plus, available on the pub lic catalog. When you search for a book, Novelist Plus will make recommendations of books you might also like in both fiction and non-fiction.

Do you want to know the order of a series that you are enjoying? Novelist Plus provides full series information. Tired of searching for reviews? Novelist Plus provides reviews from professionals and regular readers (via Goodreads) as well as "ten best lists," lists of award winners, and the titles of the newest books in CLAMS libraries. To get to Novelist Plus, go to the CLAMS website. Click on the icon on the left and then on your library. You can also access Novelist Plus directly from the YPL website, under "Research and Reading" then under "resources."

You may have noticed a small change in our arrangement of new materials and YPL reader recommendations. New fiction and our display have changed places with non-fiction and large print fiction. Let us know what you think.

Finally, Yarmouth Town Meeting has joined Barnstable and Dennis in supporting
The Register digitization project. That means that The Register newspaper, which has told the news of Yarmouth Port (as well as Dennis and Barnstable) since 1836, will be available for anyone with access to a computer to search their files. In the mean time, the YPL will continue to make our microfilm copies available to all here in the library.

In Memoriam

Jean Paquin, Trustee:

With heavy hearts, the Yarmouth Port Library reports the passing of longtime Trustee, Jean Paquin.

Her decades of service, both on the front lines and especially behind the scenes, made her an integral part of the Library's success.

Jean contributed her wise counsel, cheerful smiles, and thousands of cookies to library projects, programs, and events. She was faithful, hardworking, and remarkably kind.

We will miss her.

Mark Baker:

Along with many in Yarmouth Port, the YPL has been a client of Mark Baker's painting services. Mark died peacefully on February 10, 2018 after a brief battle with leukemia. We will remember Mark for his wide interests, his stream of cheerful insights, and his easy personal interactions. We will all miss him. The black and white yard signs announcing his work may not disappear.
His company, Mark Baker House Painting, will remain in the hands of his partner, Marcio Silva, and the YPL will continue to rely on him for its painting needs. We invite others to join us in helping to support the business Mark started here.

2018 MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN RESULTS

If you had intended to give, but have not yet done so, now is the time...

By Les Peat, Treasurer

With about six weeks to go until the end of the campaign on June 30th, based upon past experience, it seems likely that we will once again fail to meet our $40,000 goal, as the total stood at only $37,565 on May 15th.

To all who have contributed, our heartfelt thanks. If you had intended to give, but have not yet done so, now is the time to write your check; if you have already given, but could make an additional gift, that would be welcome as well.

Every dollar that we raise for current operations through the Membership Program is a dollar that is not dependent on the investment performance of our endowment -- a good thing in today's uncertain market.
