The Library kicks off Summer Learning by getting books into the hands of every Redwood City and

Redwood Shores student.

It’s June 1, the first day of the 2026 Summer Learning Challenge! The Summer Learning Challenge engages youth, families and adults by challenging them to read, explore new activities and learn new skills all summer long.

Visit any Redwood City Public Library location to sign up in-person or sign up online. Log 20 minutes of reading or listening each day and each time you try a new activity this summer. Just for registering, all participants can pick up a free book at their library. Kids and teens that complete the challenge will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship and other fun weekly prizes.

Did you know that summer is a great time for library events! Beginning June 15, you can find performers on Tuesdays at Magical Bridge, Wednesdays at Redwood Shores Branch Library and Saturdays at the Downtown Library. Below is a snapshot of summer programs coming soon - save the dates!

Desafío de Aprendizaje de Verano

¡Es primero de junio, el primer día del Desafío de Aprendizaje de Verano 2026! El Desafío de Aprendizaje de Verano es una forma divertida – y GRATUITA – de atraer a jóvenes, familias y adultos desafiándoles a leer, explorar nuevas actividades y aprender nuevas habilidades durante todo el verano.

Visite cualquier sucursal de la Biblioteca Pública de Redwood City para inscribirse en persona o inscríbase en línea. Registre 20 minutos de lectura o audición por día y cada vez que participe en una actividad nueva durante este verano. Por solamente inscribirse, todos los participantes pueden recoger un libro gratuito en su biblioteca local. Niños y adolescentes que completen el desafío entraran en un sorteo de una beca de 1.000 dólares y otros premios divertidos semanales.

Además, ¡el verano es una época fantástica para los eventos de la biblioteca! Throughout June, the City of Redwood City and community partners will host Juneteenth celebrations honoring Black history, culture, creativity and joy. Redwood City Public Library program highlights include author Marissa McGee presenting Free the Curls, a Juneteenth Printmaking workshop, a Historical Perspective and Conversation with Lois Fried, and family-friendly Storytelling and Music with Kirk Waller. In June, visit the Downtown Library and Redwood Shores Branch Library to view the Threads of Culture - Art Exhibition. Another exhibition, Ravenswood Remembered, starts June 9 at the San Mateo County History Museum. On June 19 at 6pm, don’t miss celebrating the Juneteenth holiday with Music on the Square - Patton Leatha.

Lunch at the Library

The Downtown Library invites families to join us for Lunch at the Library, a free summer program offering nutritious meals for kids and teens in a welcoming, engaging environment. From June 15 through July 24, children can enjoy healthy lunches while exploring food and farm-themed activities and books designed to support learning, curiosity, and well-being. No registration is required.

In addition to daily lunch service, families can arrive early on Fridays for Fun Fridays: Fresh Experiences Before Lunch, beginning at 11am. These special programs feature hands-on, interactive visits from farmers, beekeepers, and even live animals, giving kids a chance to connect more deeply with where their food comes from and the people who grow and prepare it.

Almuerzo en la Biblioteca

De lunes a viernes, 12-1pm

La Biblioteca Central invita a las familias a participar en Almuerzo en la Biblioteca, un programa de verano gratuito que ofrece comidas nutritivas para niños y adolescentes en un ambiente acogedor y estimulante. A partir del 15 de junio al 24 de julio, los niños podrán disfrutar de almuerzos saludables mientras participan en actividades y leen libros con temas relacionados a la alimentación y la agricultura, diseñados para fomentar el aprendizaje, la curiosidad y el bienestar. No es necesario inscribirse.

Además del servicio diario de almuerzo, las familias pueden llegar temprano los viernes para participar en Viernes Divertidos: Experiencias Frescas antes del Almuerzo, que comienza a las 11am. Estos programas especiales incluyen visitas prácticas e interactivas de agricultores, apicultores, chefs e incluso animales vivos, que brinda a los niños la oportunidad de conectar más profundamente con el origen de sus alimentos y con las personas que los cultivan y preparan.

The 2026 California Statewide Direct Primary Election is tomorrow, June 2. The Downtown Library is an official San Mateo County Vote Center, with hours from 7am-8pm. Redwood Shores Branch Library is home to a Ballot Drop Box. The Drop Box is located in front of the library, adjacent to the book drop. On Election Day, the Ballot Drop Box will be open until 8pm.
