Volume 6 I June 2024

WELCOME LETTER

Our office just got more furry- We have some new 4-legged friends hanging out with us in the office. Eddie is excited to be a big brother to all of them! Terry recently adopted former medical research beagle, Sherlock, who has loved receiving belly rubs from all our team members. We're excited to welcome him to the dog family here at Camp and Camp.

While bring your dog to work day is officially recognized on June 21, these canines are hard at work here almost everyday. Seen above, Sherlock joins Eddie and Lola to work on some upcoming projects.

ASLA NEWS UPDATE: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STRATEGIES REDUCE IMPACTS OF DANGEROUS EXTREME HEAT

In this article ASLA highlights how we as landscape architects can mitigate climate change effects such as rising temperatures. With climate sensitive design and thoughtful planning, we can help reduce some effects such as the urban heat island effect. At Camp and Camp we are proud to be apart of this change by incorporating green infrastructure on our designs. Our thoughtful planning creates comfortable spaces for all, so they have a safe place to live or recreate. This is especially important with the hot temperatures seen in our East Bay microclimates.

One specific strategy for heat mitigation targets a typically unused space- rooftops. Below is our plan for a future green roof in Walnut Creek. Green roofs are a great solution not only for temperature reduction in buildings, but also for pollinator connection and energy savings. This intensive style green roof also creates a social gathering space to accommodate for human recreation.

CAMP AND CAMP WELCOMES SLADE WOEHRLE AND MADDI HIGHAM TO THE TEAM

The Camp and Camp team has recently been expanded to welcome two new members. Slade Woehrle returns after receiving his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture this May from the Washington State University. We have had the pleasure of welcoming him back on the team for a permanent position after watching him excel as he interned with us last summer.

Maddi Higham joins us as an intern this summer, after completing her second year at Cal Poly SLO, also in the Landscape Architecture program. Having grown up in the East Bay, Maddi is excited to work close to home while on her summer break.

PRESERVE CALIFORNIA'S BEAUTY- PROTECT NATIVE SPECIES

California is largely unique in its highly varied landscapes and plants that come with this. All the way from the Pacific Northwest to the dry Death Valley, our home state offers an expansive range of blooms for us to enjoy.

Many of these, however, are threatened or even endangered. These species are not just visually appealing, but play crucial roles in our complex ecosystems. Many other species may rely on these threatened ones as a food source or habitat, so we must aid in the conservation.

Some tips that we like to use at Camp and Camp that you can use to help protect the natural California environment:

-Plant natives in your yard

-Stay out of sensitive habitats and do not trample environments when outdoors

-Donate! Follow this link to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to learn about some of the endangered species and how to donate towards reputable sources in their favor.

CALIFORNIA SUMMER LAWN CARE TIPS

As summer weather rolls around the corner, the dry weather may take a toll on certain plants in the yard. The lawn is usually the most noticeable, but we have complied some quick tips to help your yard's center piece look its best even during the dry season.

  • Mow high
  • Feed
  • Treat for grubs
  • Water deeply
  • Water early (between 6-10 AM)
  • Sharpen your blade

For further advice, READ HERE.

For longer term resilience, consider implementing California Native Grass species. DELTA BLUEGRASS CO. has some great options and information on numerous varieties. Whether you're going for a rolling meadow look or a traditional mowed lawn, there are California natives available for every option.

Bringing natives into your landscape can help cultivate biodiversity while saving you money on water!
