Fathers Message

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ.

We are all members of one body, the holy body of Christ, which is His Church. The Church of Christ consists of saints. We celebrate all these known or unknown saints on the Sunday after Pentecost. From the moment we get baptized in the baptismal font, we have the opportunity to become saints. All the parts of the body of Christ are holy because the body of Christ itself is holy. Regardless of whether that part is small or large, eye or hand, foot or nail, the body members play their role and have their importance. Every Christian is unique in front of God. This exceptional relationship with God determines the soul of man. In the Church, man is sanctified, in an unbreakable path towards salvation. This unique harmony is disturbed by our sin and selfishness. Thus, sin creates problems not only personal or simply moral but functional. God calls us for repentance. That means understanding and fertilizing our relationship with Christ and renouncing sin. Let us celebrate this feast of All Saints, redefining ourselves, loving our fellow men and God, and avoiding sins and selfishness. Accepting this invitation of Christ and His Church for sanctification, let us also participate in His holy Body and Blood with all the known and unknown saints from the beginning of time, whose feast we celebrate this Sunday.

Prot. No. 134/2022

Archepiscopal Encyclical for Father’s Day

Sunday of All Saints

June 19, 2022

Unto the Most Reverend and Right Reverend Hierarchs, Pious Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, Presidents and Members of Parish Councils, Honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Members of Leadership 100, the Day and Afternoon Schools, Philoptochos Societies, the Youth, Greek Orthodox Organizations, and the entirety of the Christ-named Plenitude of the Holy Archdiocese of America:

My Beloved Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This Father’s Day, I ask for our entire Archdiocese to remember the “fathers” of our communities across the nation — that is, our very own clergy, who serve everyone so selflessly. This is our second year of recognizing the parish clergy of the Church on this special occasion. And the fact that it coincides with the feast of All Saints gives it even greater force, as we ourselves are all “called to be saints” as well (Romans 1:7).

We observe this day for our priestly “fathers in Christ” by asking for special collections to be made for the Clergy Pension Fund. Your generosity will help secure this fund for future generations of clergy, who sacrifice so much for the life of our communities. Such donations can be made either individually — with voluntary, charitable giving — or through parishes, which support this effort by their participation in the Clergy Benefits Program. Either way, every gift has a tremendous impact on the health of the fund, by bringing it to its full potential.

And so, I express to each and every member of our Sacred Archdiocese my profound gratitude for the support — both material and spiritual — that they offer to our priests. Your dedication to the life of our parishes through your sustaining love for the clergy is vital to our progress as a Church. Therefore, as we fulfill the injunction to ‘honor our fathers,’ let us make of this Father’s Day a very special opportunity for true philanthropy and support the Clergy Pension Fund.

With paternal blessings and love in Christ,

In response to the tragic humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and the immediate aid needed there, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced a major fundraising effort today that will help those most affected by the Russian invasion.
The first action taken by Archbishop Elpidophoros this morning was to donate $100,000 to the Ecumenical Patriarchate to support the efforts of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Archbishop Elpidophoros also announced the creation of the Ukrainian Relief Effort, which was established in collaboration with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC)*.
Together, the Archdiocese and IOCC aim to raise $1 million for both immediate and long-term support of the Ukrainian people.
In his Encyclical on the crisis, Archbishop Elpidophoros states:
"We join our spirit to the spirit of His All-Holiness and exhort all our Faithful: offer prayers and tangible support for all the Ukrainian People, those of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and those of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate, those of the Ukrainian Catholic and Jewish communities, and all who find themselves in the dire circumstances of war.”

 2022 Stewardship Campaign

Click and Pay your Stewardship or Make a Donation

In January, we started our 2022 Stewardship Campaign by reaching out to all of St. Spyridon’s parishioners and friends. We feel blessed and humbled by your enthusiastic response. But there is still a lot to do. To face the uncertainty of the future, we need to build our community here and now based on the embodiment of Christ’s teaching and example. This is why stewardship is so crucial.

As you know, Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life that acknowledges our responsibility before God. A primary goal of stewardship is spiritual growth. We become Stewards when we believe in God and begin to act on our beliefs. As Orthodox Christians, we acknowledge that every aspect of our life is a gift from Him. We are called to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which we have been blessed.

An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church, as the Body of Christ, in its prayers and services, in its social and philanthropic activities.

So, what can we do? Offer Treasury. Sure, we need it to keep our church open. But we can also give of our Time and Talent to the Church. What does that mean? Good question! In an effort to make stewardship more concrete, the Stewardship Committee has decided to dedicate the next four Sundays to stewardship awareness. We will bring in people who will share with the community their experience with stewardship.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Mode

O Father, God-bearer, Spyridon, you were proven a champion and Wonder Worker of the First Ecumenical Council. You spoke to the girl in the grave and turned the serpent to gold. And, when chanting your prayers, most sacred One, angels ministered with you. Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.

 Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Fourth Mode. Psalm 67.35,26.

God is wonderful among his saints.

Verse: Bless God in the congregations.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2.

Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated - of whom the world was not worthy - wandering over deserts and mountains and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

Fourth Mode.

 Liturgical Gospel Reading

The Sunday of All Saints

The Reading is from Matthew 10:32-33; 37-38; 19:27-30

The Lord said to his disciples, "Every one who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven; but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny him before my Father who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me." Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first."

The Sunday of All Saints
