Highlights from the January 21, 2026 Board Meeting

Establishment of New Position - Village Auditor

The Board of Trustees established a new position for the Treasurer's office - the Village Auditor. As mandated by New York State, the newly established part-time Auditor will provide an additional internal control for the payment of bills by confirming that all purchasing adheres to Village policies and State and Federal regulations before payment is issued. This extra layer of review helps mitigate any risks associated with the expenditure of public money, and helps the Village meet requirements imposed by New York State. This position will be a part-time contractual position, and might be a good position for a member of our community with corresponding skills and experience. The Village will be circulating the opportunity once the new code amendment has been filed with New York State.

Alarm Permits

The Village requires that all resident and business owners, who have a home or business alarm system obtain an Alarm Permit through the Village of Tarrytown per Chapter 76 of the Village Code. This permit ensures that any device which transmits a signal to our police or fire departments is registered with the Village. This process also helps cut down on the number of false alarms which cost the Village many lost hours in response time on the part of our police officers and volunteer fire department members.

The Board of Trustees will be reducing the term for an alarm permit from two years to one year, and thereby will reduce the corresponding fee by half. This is part of the transition to a new online permitting software that will allow applicants to apply for and receive Village permits online and renew them online when the time comes.

Want some advice on how to cut down on false alarms and the fees that are charged when too many are triggered? 80% of all false alarms are due to "user error." Here are some tips for making sure that your alarm is triggered only in case of emergency.

New Planning Board Member

After 20 years volunteering for the Village of Tarrytown Planning Board, David Aukland is stepping down. David has been a key contributor to many initiatives impacting the Village landscape including serving on committees focused on Zoning and Subdivision Code changes, the Comprehensive Plan, the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement, Village trailways, the Tree Commission and on Rt. 9 improvements, among others. David moved to Tarrytown in 1986 for what was supposed to be a temporary two-year secondment with IBM, and has been here ever since. After retiring from IBM in 2005, David wanted to engage with his community, and he has since made a huge impact on the Village he calls home. He has given countless hours to this Village and we are all thankful.

Replacing David Aukland on the Planning Board is Mark Weinstein, an attorney by profession with experience representing non-profit organizations and serving as legal counsel to State Assembly representatives. Mark Weinstein has been serving as an alternate on the Zoning Board of Appeals since March 2025.

Celebrate Black History Month

with Us in February

Please join us at the first Village Board of Trustees Meeting in February on Wednesday, February 4, 2026 to honor William "Bill" Burnette, a longtime Village resident and contributor to our community who passed away in 2025. We will be joined by local family members of Mr. Burnette to recognize his work with the School District, his contributions to organizations like the Community Opportunity Center and the Tarrytown Municipal Housing Authority, and other ways he helped shape the Tarrytown community throughout his lifetime.

We also invite you to join us later in February at the TaSH Farmer's Market on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The Cultural Heritage Recognition Committee was newly formed in 2025 and has put together a wonderful event to celebrate Black culture, history and community in cooperation with the TaSH. Taste dessert offerings from Pik Nik, listen to MoTown music, and learn about the Harriet Tubman Scenic Byway. We look forward to celebrating Black History in Tarrytown with you in February.
