The Tear-Stained, Victorious Path of Sun Myung Moon

“His words struck deep into my bosom like sharp arrows.”

Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be found and brought to light. Luke 8:17

Jesus revealed many things to him: “His words were always on the mark, and they struck deep into my bosom like sharp arrows. These were not mere words; they were revelations about the creation of the universe that opened the door to a new world.”

SMM, As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen

Hello Richard,

On Sunday, I (Richard Panzer) started the sermon by wishing all the fathers a “Happy Father’s Day!” and also to our Heavenly Father above. The 2nd King has created a moving new painting called “The Cosmos Inside the Cardboard Hut.”

As stated in Luke 8:17, everything that is hidden will be brought out into the light. A society that is just and good must be based on truth. That is why reviewing Father’s life as recorded in his autobiography, “As a Peace-loving Global Citizen,” is so important.

During the Japanese occupation of Korea, when Sun Myung Moon was just 14 years old, he dared to tell officials at the Jeongju Public Normal School graduation that “Japanese people should pack their bags as soon as possible and go back to Japan!” Later, when he was trying to go to Japan to continue his studies, the chief of police refused to approve his application, but changed his mind after the stubborn teenager argued with him.

After Sun Myung Moon met with Jesus after an all-night prayer in 1935, Jesus revealed many things to him: “His words were always on the mark, and they struck deep into my bosom like sharp arrows. These were not mere words; they were revelations about the creation of the universe that opened the door to a new world.”

After the liberation from Japan, he was guided to marry Sun-kil Choi. One month after the birth of their son, he went out to pick up rice that had been purchased previously. On the way, he received a revelation that said: “Go across the 38th parallel! Find the people of God who are in the north.” So he walked across into the Communist-controlled North. Streams of refugees were passing him going in the opposite direction, but he did not hesitate.

He was concerned about his wife, but later explained, “God’s commands are very serious, and they must be followed without reservation or hesitation.”

During his evangelistic activities in Pyongyang he attracted many people of faith, including the most dedicated members of large churches. Many clergy, jealous about his success, reported him to the Communist authorities and he was sent to the prison at the Heungnam fertilizer factory, where prisoners were worked and starved to death.

In prison he became friends with all kinds of people including a murderer. In that dire situation even insects like lice or fleas can become your friends and teach you life lessons.

In 1950, after UN forces led by General Douglas MacArthur bombed the walls of the Hung Nam prison he and other prisoners were able to escape. He went to Pyongyang to reconnect with his church disciples. He and Won Pil Kim helped another man who had a broken leg to make the difficult trip to the south.

Upon arriving in Pusan, he and Won Pil Kim built a shack from discarded American cardboard boxes and plastic. Father worked on writing the first text of the Divine Principle, called Wolli Wonbon, while Won Pil Kim made and sold portrait paintings to American soldiers. The day he finished writing it, May 10, 1952, he prayed, “the moment has come for me to evangelize. Please send me the saints to whom I may give witness.”

He saw a young woman wiping the sweat from her brow as she struggled up the hill toward the well. She said, My name is Hyun Shil Kang. I am an evangelist. I heard there is a crazy man living here, so I have come here to witness to him.”

Father explained, “Until this morning, I was writing a book that reveals the principles of the universe. I think God sent you here so that you can learn about these principles from me.”

“What?” she demanded, “I am here because I heard there is a crazy man living there who needs to be witnessed to.” They discussed theology for several days. In the end, she chose to devote her life to the principle Father taught.

The rest of the sermon discussed tragic and heartbreaking incidents in Father’s life such as:

1. His wife, Sun-kil Choi, and 7 year-old son coming to visit him, but his not being able to embrace them at that time.

2. The persecution arising from students and professors being expelled from Ewha University.

3. The persecution and imprisonment of church members in Czechoslovakia and other Communist countries, some of whom died as well as the miraculous guidance that several experienced during that time.

4. Father’s speech in 1991 to top officials in the North Korean government in which he bluntly told them that they must abandon Communism and allow religious freedom. Church members traveling with Father feared they might all end up in prison or worse, but it was followed by a meeting where Father embraced his archenemy and mass murderer, Kim Il Sung, and promised to invest hundreds of millions to bring North Korea out of poverty and pave the way for closer relations with the South.

I finished by showing a video interview with the neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Egnor, who explained how hundreds of brain operations led him to abandon atheism and a materialist worldview and to embrace the reality of God.
