The Tennis and Pickleball Club at Newport Beach
March, 2022
Dear members,

March Madness is here, although I wish it was called March Happiness. I am happy to say that your Clubhouse and food service is officially open today. Happiness is on the rise at TTC, with the various events planned and the delicious food that our chef has prepared for us.

This is an important month for all Tennis communities world wide, and a good number of our members will be traveling to Indian Wells, for the BNP Paribas Tennis Championship. The best players in the world, Roger Federer, Rafel Nadal, Serena Williams, along with other greats and legends will be competing this year! But don’t worry if you can’t be there, your Clubhouse will have the matches live on the big screens. Come out and enjoy the games while enjoying a bite or drink.

Summer is around the corner, and at TTC we will be offering half day and full day kids Camps provided by our World Class pros. In addition this year, we will be launching a new Pickleball Junior Program.

It’s important for all members to download the TTC app, TTC Tennis and Pickleball Club. Once you have done so, please click on register and enter the same name and email on your club profile. If you need any help, anyone at the front desk can confirm that information for you. Once you have done so, you will receive an email with your password to login. Look for an additional email soon with information about the app’s functions and how it will benefit you.

Reminder: the Hoag Classic is taking place this week (ending Sunday, March 6) at Newport Beach Country Club. Although we will be managing our parking lot to the best of our ability, this will definitely impact member parking. We encourage you to carpool or take an Uber or Lift to the Club this week. To help offset this ride service expense, the club will reimburse you up to $10 per ride. In addition, valet parking will be offered this week at no charge to you.

We are working on some new improvements for the club and look forward to sharing the news as we get closer to completion.

Happy March and Happy Spring everybody!

I wish you well and please let me know if I can ever assist you with anything.

This clinic is free to all recent new members, one time only. Our coaches will give on-court instruction and we will help you navigate the numerous clinics and organized play offered at TTC Pickleball.
DROP-IN COURTS
Courts 1-4 are designated as Drop-In Courts. This allows our members to play even when they don't have a scheduled match, especially during busy times.
Courts 5 and 7 are also Drop-In Courts on Saturday mornings.
These levels are a guide and adjust based on members playing at any given time. You should challenge on a court at your skill level. Watch the matches in play and challenge on a court that is at your skill level.
Court 1 - Advanced
Court 2 - Intermediate
Court 3 - Advanced Intermediate
Court 4 - Social/Beginner

Saturday mornings
Court 5 - Advanced Intermediate
Court 7 -Intermediate

Drop-In Courts are managed by the Director of Pickleball. Abbi is available during peak periods to advise members and adjust playing levels for the Drop-In Courts.
To challenge, place your paddle in the rack outside the court and notify the players you are making a challenge. Once the current match is completed, the winning team stays on the court with the challenger(s). If your team wins three games in a row, you must vacate the court and re-challenge.
COURT RESERVATIONS

Court reservations are available only for groups of members needing three or more courts, so that group play can be assured of adjacent courts. Members only!

A maximum of eight courts can be reserved up to one week in advance
(minimum of 24 hours in advance)
Reservation sessions are an hour and a half
Court reservations on upper courts (13-28) only
No group reservations or guests Saturdays
Court reservation times
8-9:30, 9:30-11, 11-12:30, 12:30-2, 2-3:30, 3:30-5, 5-6:30, 6:30-8

We recommend checking in at the Pro Shop prior to playing to determine which courts are reserved and avoid being asked to move due to a group reservation. You can also see the current schedule by clicking the button below.

Click the button below or contact us at [email protected] to reserve courts for a member group.
COURT POLICY DURING PEAK PERIODS
During busy play times (typically Friday and Saturday mornings) court times may be restricted. If your group has been on a court for an hour and a half, you may be asked by the Pickleball Director or management to give up the court for a waiting member group. We encourage you to use this opportunity to play on Challenge Courts, or take a break and wait for another court to become available.
MARCH MADNESS
MEMBER TOURNAMENT
The second annual March Madness Members-Only Tournament will be held Saturday, March 19th, and all members are welcome to participate!

This tournament is unique - players will be matched with a partner (at the same skill level) during the Draft Party on Friday, March 11th at 6pm. Partners will be assigned a school (i.e. UCLA, Auburn, Duke, etc.) that they will represent in the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the team that shows the most creative and best school spirit!

Members will register as individuals for either Women's or Men's Doubles. Players will be placed in conferences (Pac-12, SEC, Big 12, etc.) based on their skill level. All skill levels are encouraged to play.
Reminder - All courts will be reserved for the tournament - there will be no Saturday Ladders or court reservations the day of the tournament. As the tournament progresses, courts will become available for member use on a first come, first served basis for a maximum of an hour and a half.

LADDER PLAY
Ladders are a fun way to play pickleball with other members at a similar skill level. We have added a number of ladders to our schedule and encourage you to play in a ladder when you can.

Ladders are designated by skill level. If you aren't sure of your skill level, please ask one of the coaches for a rating. Members can only play in a Ladder at their skill level.

All players are asked to arrive fifteen minutes early to warm up. Rounds are 12 minutes each with a two minute water break between rounds. Winners move up one court, lowest score moves down one court and everyone changes partners for their next match.

Late cancellations (less than 24 hours) will not be able to participate the following week.
There are separate GroupMe accounts for each Ladder. Signups for each Ladder will be posted weekly. Only those who sign up on GroupMe will be able to participate.

COACH ABBI'S TIP OF THE MONTH
Don't analyze your shots during recreational play. During a lesson, let your coach analyze for you, then focus on their advice during rec play. Focus on one skill or shot at a time when you play - and have fun!

RULE OF THE MONTH
Many of us are not familiar with all the rules of Pickleball, so we will include a different rule in this newsletter every month.

9.G.   A player may stay inside the non-volley zone to return a ball that has bounced. There is no violation if a player does not exit the non-volley zone after hitting a ball that bounces.
9.H.   There is no violation if a player returns the ball while their partner is standing in the non-volley zone.
Are you interested in learning more about the rules of pickleball?

TTC members Lynn Gosselin and Cindy Lightner are USAPA Level Two trained referees. They will be coordinating future training sessions, for members who are interested in becoming referees, or just want to learn more about the rules of pickleball. Let them know if you're interested!
GROUP ME
GroupMe is a great tool for our members to set up matches and sign up for events (other than League). Our page is "TTC Newport Beach Pickleball Club".

Patty Weber is the administrator of our GroupMe app. Give her a call at 480-292-1499 if you have any questions, she's happy to help!

We recommend muting your notifications on GroupMe as some of our members LOVE to post! To mute, click the icon on the top right of the screen - the top item is a toggle to mute.
Remember your posts are being seen by all our members - GroupMe should not be used for personal communication.

A calendar of upcoming events can be found on GroupMe, under Calendar. This is where you will see Ladders and Sunday Fundays, as well as events posted by other members.
You can set up a separate string within GroupMe to communicate with specific members.

Patty can walk you through the process if you need assistance.
DRESS CODE
At TTC Pickleball, the dress code is conservative. Women should refrain from wearing any overly revealing clothing. Men should not wear cutoff shorts or muscle shirts.

Please show respect to our club and your fellow members by wearing the appropriate attire.
THE PRO SHOP
The Pro Shop is proud to introduce Kareem Gobran (Director of Tennis) as the new co-owner of The Pro Shop with Abbi Ghasemi (Director of Pickleball). We would like to acknowledge and thank Ted Angelo as he exits his position as co-owner of the Pro Shop. It was Ted's hard work alongside Abbi that made the Pro Shop a reality and we are grateful.

New and exciting merchandise will be arriving this month! You will find some of your favorite Tennis and Pickleball merchandise, as well as drinks and snacks. The Pro Shop will match prices of any retailer, including online. They can also special order merchandise for you. Thank you for supporting The Pro Shop!

CLUB REMINDERS
TTC is a smoke-free facility.
Dogs are not permitted.
Court shoes must be worn when playing on the courts.
COURT ETIQUETTE
Many new members are unaware of the "etiquette" of pickleball (and many "old" members may need a reminder!) We hope a few basic pointers will be helpful. We should all be considerate of other members on the court!

  • Please don’t enter or exit across a court when a point is in progress. Wait until play has stopped; then move briskly so as to not hold up the match.
  • If entering or exiting from one of the gates, be sure to close the gate behind you.
  • If you hit an errant ball onto an adjacent court that is in the midst of a point, causing a potential safety issue, call out “Ball On” to notify other players and stop their play. If your errant ball is not a safety issue, wait until the point is over before retrieving your ball.
  • Members are welcome to play music on the courts, but please be respectful of other players by keeping the volume at a level that it can only be heard on your court. If other members ask you to turn your music down, please do so.
