Moreover, the act of chewing mobilizes the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) for digestion. Finally, we have enzymes in our mouth that start the digestive process before even reaching the GI tract. All of this is bypassed if we juice our fruit and vegetables.

As reported in Nutrients, those who performed just a short-term juicing detox juice intervention exhibited changes in saliva and cheek microbiota, particularly in the relative abundances of pro-inflammatory bacterial families. Bacterial taxa associated with gut permeability, inflammation, and cognitive decline increased in relative abundance. The authors purport this is due to the high sugar and low fiber intake of the juice-related products.

This reaffirms our position that eating the real thing is always preferred!

Steve: A new study from Nature Aging found that omega-3 and vitamin D3 supplementation with exercise over a three-year span slowed the aging process.

The study took place across five European countries from 2012 to 2014. The researchers reviewed data on more than 700 people aged 70 or over who were given either a placebo or omega-3, vitamin D and exercise alone or in combination. 

Subjects avoided several months of biological aging over three years by taking one gram of supplemental omega-3 fatty acids, with additive benefits from taking vitamin D3 (2,000IU per day) and engaging in 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. Together, the 3 treatments reduced biological aging by 2.9-3.8 months.

On its own, omega-3 slowed biological aging in three of the epigenetic clocks the researchers used.

Imagine these benefits over a lifetime? And the best part? Big Pharma cannot patent this and make it unattainable for much of the world. Omega-3 and vitamin D3 supplements are very affordable and exercise is free!

On the flip side, a new study from Clinical Nutrition found a diet low in vegetables and fruits and high in fast food and sweetened soft drinks was associated with accelerated biological aging even in young adulthood.
