Submit your prayer intentions for the Holy Land Pilgrimage January 22-31, 2023

The parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land departs, at long last, on Sunday, January 22, 2023. 116 parishioners will join Father Ryan on this journey, following in the footsteps of Jesus.

You are invited to join the pilgrims virtually by submitting your prayer intentions and praying along with the pilgrims each day of the pilgrimage. All intentions submitted will be included in a book that will be placed at the altar at each Mass celebrated. Please help make this a pilgrimage of prayer for the whole parish community by sharing your own intentions and by praying along with the pilgrims each day. Download the daily prayer book here. Photos, videos, and reflections will be posted daily to Instagram and Facebook.

News and Notices

A BYZANTINE EMPEROR AT KING HENRY'S COURT: Christmas 1400 London Friday, January 20, 2023 at 7:30pm, Cappella Romana in concert. At Christmastide 1400 to 1401, Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos paid a visit to King Henry IV at Eltham Palace in London. Seeking aid against the Ottomans, the Byzantine Emperor also brought with him clergy and cantors for prayers and services. New discoveries reveal the mix of liturgical music – in Greek and in Latin – that was performed at this double-royal occasion on Old-Style Christmas (modern date of 7 January). Information and tickets, cappellaromana.org.

THE GESUALDO SIX CONCERT: ENGLISH MOTETS OF THE RENAISSANCE Monday, February 13 at 7:30pm, presented by Cappella Romana. The Gesualdo Six is a British vocal ensemble formed at Trinity College, Cambridge in 2014, comprising some of the UK’s finest consort singers. They make their Northwest début with music by English Renaissance masters, encompassing florid medieval-sounding pieces by Morley and Sheryngham, intricate works by Tallis and Byrd, and the beautiful simplicity of Gibbons and Tomkins. More info and tickets ($5-$53) at https://cappellaromana.org/concert/gesualdosix/. A limited number of pay-what-you-can parishioner passes are available at the parish office reception desk, or contact the music office at musicoffice@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4874.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A young couple with an infant needed help to pay rent when there was a change of employment and lapse of income. They called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline requesting assistance (206-767-6449). When we visited, a large fan in their apartment was helping to remove smoke from a fire that had occurred in the upper floors of their building. They proudly showed us their beautiful baby. With your support we were able to give them enough money to pay rent for a month. Recently we discovered these neighbors had moved into new family housing. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

Information and registration, John Marquez,

BECOMING A US CITIZEN HAS LIFE CHANGING BENEFITS Having found safety in a domestic violence shelter, Reina (not her real name) and her children began the difficult journey of rebuilding independence and stability. Though they were physically safe, Reina’s ex-spouse continued to find ways to make stability hard to obtain. One attempt to harm Reina was through the immigration process. Through Immigrant Assistance’s legal services, Reina was able to overcome her ex-husband’s attempts to prevent her from becoming a US citizen. Having obtained US citizenship, she now has the peace of mind that her ex-husband can no longer threaten her ability to remain safely in the US with her children. We are able to provide these life changing services at no cost. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a US Citizen, we can help. CARE FOR CREATION TIP The Washington State Legislature’s 2013 session began this week. Now would be the most opportune time to ask your elected representatives to support legislation that limits carbon pollution, protects natural resources, supports international efforts to fight climate change, protects environmental health, or promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy. (WA is doing great in this action under a climate- focused Governor Jay Inslee)

SOCIAL OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY STAFF TRANSITIONS The last week has seen a couple of staffing changes for St. James Social Outreach and Advocacy. On Friday, January 6, we said farewell to Maria Tally, who had served as Assistant Director of the Cathedral Kitchen. We will certainly miss seeing Maria’s spirit every day, but she will still be a part of the Kitchen team as a volunteer. Many of you also are aware that Nancy Granger, who had served as the Cathedral’s Mental Health and Wellness Nurse, retired in October. This past week, we welcomed Nancy’s successor, Anisa Ralls, to the Cathedral’s pastoral team. Anisa comes to us after many years as the emergency room social worker at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. Welcome to St. James Cathedral, Anisa!

ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER AT ST. JAMES? Many who attend St. James regularly and consider the Cathedral their parish have never officially registered. We strongly encourage you to register. Registered parishioners receive important mailings from the Cathedral (including offering envelopes!). You can register online at www.stjames-cathedral.org.

CATHOLIC ADVOCACY BULLETIN The Washington State Catholic Conference (WSCC) represents the legislative priorities of our state's bishops in Olympia. With a long legislative session slated for 2023, the WSCC will be publishing weekly bulletins starting in January. There will be plenty of news and updates, as well as sign-in opportunities for bills and information to contact your legislators. Subscribe, https://www.wacatholics.org/be-an-advocate/join-our-network.

HYGIENE ITEMS FOR OUR UNSHELTERED NEIGHBORS The St Vincent de Paul Society is seeking donations of hygiene items for Seattle’s unsheltered neighbors. Donated items will be assembled into individual hygiene kits which will then be distributed in person by SVdP volunteers several days each week to those in need. Hygiene items being sought include: hotel/travel size shampoo; lotion; bar soap; hand sanitizer. Also: disposable razors; deodorant; lip balm; dental floss, toothbrush, toothpaste; Kleenex. The donation collection box is located in the Cathedral Book Store. Donations can be made Monday through Friday 11am-3pm and after each weekend Mass.

Poem of the Month: Psalm 122

Scott Webster reads Psalm 122 in the translation of the Authorized Version, the King James Bible, and Corinna Laughlin offers commentary and context.

The Chair: A Documentary

The Archdiocese of Seattle was recently featured in a video series called “The Chair,” celebrating cathedrals, bishops and dioceses throughout the United States. Both Father Ryan and Corinna Laughlin are featured in this 24-minute film, which also includes stunning footage of the Cathedral. It's free to watch but does require creating a free account to access the Seattle episode.
