Alex Salmond was the First Minister of Scotland between 2007 to 2014 and was a prominent figure in the Scottish nationalist movement. He was Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) on two occasions and then served as leader of the Alba Party up until his untimely death this month.
In a BBC Scotland profile in 2011, Salmond was described as the only Scottish politician to become well known in England and internationally while spending most of his career in Scottish politics.
Born on Hogmanay 1954 in Linlithgow, Scotland, Alexander Elliot Anderson Salmond grew up in a town soaked in Scottish history and tradition. A talented boy soprano, he sang in St Michael's Parish Church. He was known as a "mischief maker" and made his way to the University of St. Andrew's where he studied economics and medieval history. "If he had two options to make a political point, he would always choose the one which allowed him to make mischief as well as making the point," a close friend said. "But he was also a brilliantly focused politician."
Salmond had a remarkable life and was an important chapter in the story of the independence movement.
