Dr. Robin Vanderpool , Dept. of Health, Behavior & Society, will speak in the "Closing the Gap between Urban and Rural HPV Vaccination Rates," webinar, sponsored by Rural Health Information Hub. The webinar is a free event.

Systems for Action Chair Gives Seminar
Systems for Action  National Advisory Committee Chair  Dr.  Darrell Gaskin  will present " The Impact of a Community-Based Intervention on Hospital Utilization - the Maryland Health Enterprise Zone Initiative " as a part of the UK  Center for Health Services Research  Seminar Series. The study Dr. Gaskin and his team conducted was guided, in part, by results from the  National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems developed by Dr. Glen Mays of CPH.

Better Outcomes for NICU Infants
A multi-disciplinary, multi-institution team undertook an investigation to better understand the economic and health impact of NICU treatment of very low birth weight infants. The resulting publication, “Examining the Trade-off Between NICU Length of Stay and Postdischarge Monitoring: An Instrumental Variables Approach,”  appears in the September 2018 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management . The authors are: Dr. Geoffrey Williams , Transylvania University; Dr. Henrietta Bada , CPH Dept. of Epidemiology and UK College of Medicine; Dr. Lorie Chesnut , Wyoming Department of Health; Emily Ferrell , MPH, CPH research assistant; and Dr. Glen P. Mays , CPH Dept. of Health Management and Policy.


Peter J. Rock , KIPRC, and Dr. Michael Singleton , KIPRC and Dept. of Biostatistics, are the authors of “Assessing Definitions of Heroin Overdose in ED & EMS Data Using Hospital Billing Data, ” appearing in Online Journal of Public Health Informatics.

Dr. David Fardo , Dept. of Biostatistics, is a co-author of “Male-specific epistasis between WWC1 and TLN2 genes is associated with Alzheimer's disease, ” appearing in Neurobiology of Aging. The lead author is Dr. Elena S. Gusareva , University of Liege, Belgium.

Dr. Richard Charnigo and Dr. Olga A. Vsevolozhskaya , Dept. of Biostatistics, are two of the co-authors of  “Ticagrelor Reduces Thromboinflammatory Markers in Patients With Pneumonia,” appearing in JACC: Basic to Translational Science . Dr. Travis R. Sexton , UK Gill Heart and Vascular Institute, is the lead author. 

Funding: Dr. Robin Vanderpool , Dept. of Health, Behavior & Society, has received a one-year, $200,000 National Cancer Institute P30 administrative supplement to "To Develop Rural Cancer Control Research Capacity" in Appalachian Kentucky as part of the larger NCI initiative focused on rural cancer control. Co-investigators are: Dr. Angela Carman , CPH; Dr. Mark Dignan , UK College of Medicine; and  David Gross , Northeast Kentucky AHEC.

Manuscript acceptance: Dr. Philip Westgate , Dept. of Biostatistics, will publish "A readily available improvement over method of moments for intra-custer correlation estimation in the context of cluster randomized trials and fitting a GEE-type marginal model for binary outcomes" in Clinical Trials: Journal of the Society for Clinical Trials.
