21 of our members joined other volunteers at Feed My Starving Children's Aurora facility on May 18 to assemble MannaPacks, a vitamin-and-mineral fortified rice meal developed by Cargill, General Mills, and Pillsbury. Many thanks to Linda Lauterbach for organizing.
Applause, Applause: Rave Reviews for May 19's Choral Sermon
Our intergenerational choir learned Hebrew to sing Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a three-movement work using Psalms 108, 100, 23, 2, and 131. Many thanks to boy soloist Aurelio Tapia, percussionist Angela Kepley (sponsored by Andy Griffin and Catherine Keating in memory of Ken Marks), alto soloist Karen Jesse (sponsored by John Biegert in memory of Evelyn Biegert), tenor soloist Garrett Johannsen (sponsored by Lawrence and Carol Bain in memory of Evelyn Biegert), pianist Sooka Wang (sponsored by First Conservatory), and Aurelio's mom AnnLaura (who got a workout playing the organ for worship and harp for the choral sermon).

No Ryan and No Choir This Summer, So We Need Your Musical Talent
After 15 years as music director, Ryan Cox goes on sabbatical June 10 through Sept. 2. (That's not a vacation, by the way; it's for professional development . ) He's looking for people to perform during the offering on June 23 and June 30, so email him if you're feeling brave (or reckless). Don't want to solo? No sweat: He (or organist AnnLaura Tapia, who's music director during Ryan's absence) will find you an ensemble. Could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship!

One Child, One Hour, One Church, One School
Kids Hope USA has found partnering churches for Cossitt Avenue School in La Grange and Forest Road School in La Grange Park and has asked us to work with Congress Park School in Brookfield. Launched in 1993 and accredited by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, this nonprofit has partnered with 1,400 churches in 36 states and 30 denominations to mentor 25,000 at-risk elementary students. This is not tutoring; it's investing 1 hour of your time each week (during the school day) to build a relationship at the stage in a child's life when intervention has the greatest potential long-term impact. And it works: After one year, socio/emotional competency and educational success increase and risky behavior decreases. Here's what the organization needs from us:
  • A program director. "Train" 2 hours a week for four weeks at your convenience via the Internet, then act as liaison between volunteer mentors and school officials.
  • Volunteer mentors from our membership.
Questions? Email Nancy Heil or call her at 708-482-3409.
Help the Homeless For One Week This Summer
BEDS Plus has provided a safe place to sleep, hot homemade meals, professional counseling, and job services since 1988. We're helping by hosting one week this summer, and for that we need volunteers: 4 shifts per night with at least 2 volunteers per shift, laundry once a week, breakfast supplies, and simple evening meals. Sign up for as many shifts as you want or for a meal team, laundry, or supplies.
When : June 17-24
Where : First Congregational Church of La Grange
To volunteer : Sign up here or email Erin Molek or call 708-354-0858, ext. 113
Are You All Packed for the All-Church Campout?
