| | | Fig-ure It Out: Mastering the Art of Growing Fig Trees | | |
Saturday, May 24 from 10 AM to 12 PM
Town Hall Community Room
In this engaging workshop, you’ll uncover the secrets to successfully growing these incredible trees. We’ll explore the advantages and disadvantages of cultivating figs in pots versus planting them in the ground, delve into essential techniques like branch and root pruning, and discuss best practices for watering and caring for both potted and in-ground fig trees.
You’ll also learn how to shape your fig tree—whether you prefer it as a stately tree or a compact, productive bush—and discover effective methods for winterizing to protect your plants during colder months.
Come prepared with your questions for an open and interactive discussion! A friendly word of caution: cultivating fig trees is not just a hobby—it’s a passion that can become highly addictive. You’ve been warned!
About the Presenter: Evan Panagiotopoulos, affectionately known as The Fig Tree Guy, is a devoted fig aficionado with a deep love for cultivating a diverse array of fig trees in his garden. His passion for figs extends far beyond simple gardening; he is enthusiastic about every aspect of fig care, including growing trees both in pots and in-ground, mastering the art of rooting cuttings, and implementing effective winterization techniques. Evan’s dedication to figs is evident in his hands-on approach and his eagerness to share his knowledge with fellow enthusiasts, making him a trusted voice in the fig-growing community.
Registration Fee: $5 (everyone will leave with a rooted fig cutting of their own!)

On Tuesday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in the children's room to discuss The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman.
Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario behind The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island boardwalk freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father’s “museum,” alongside performers like the Wolfman, the Butterfly Girl, and a one-hundred-year-old turtle. One night Coralie stumbles upon a striking young man taking pictures of moonlit trees in the woods off the Hudson River. The dashing photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant who has run away from his father’s Lower East Side Orthodox community and his job as a tailor’s apprentice. When Eddie photographs the devastation on the streets of New York following the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the suspicious mystery behind a young woman’s disappearance and ignites the heart of Coralie.

| | Saturday Morning Book Club's March pick | | Looking to read ahead? The April selection for the Saturday Morning Book Club is The Air Raid Book Club by Annie Lyons. Click to reserve your copy today. | | |
The Saturday Morning Book Club will hold their next meeting on Saturday, March 29 at 10:30 a.m. They'll be discussing Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty.
The Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . .
If your mother was missing, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father? This is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings.
The Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents, Stan and Joy, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable?
The four Delaney children—Amy, Logan, Troy, and Brooke—were tennis stars in their own right, yet as their father will tell you, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon.
One night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted.
Later, when Joy goes missing, and Savannah is nowhere to be found, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent, he, like many spouses, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent, two are not so sure—but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.

This book tells the story of our 32nd President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), and his vast love of nature and trees. FDR created the Civilian Conservation Corps, known as “Roosevelt’s Tree Army,” to protect trees; many still thrive today at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site in Hyde Park, NY. The beautiful illustrations by Lauren Reese bring the story to life and help children identify different types of local trees.

About the author: A.J. Schenkman is a history teacher and award-winning author. He is a contributor to Litchfield and Dutchess Magazines and writes a monthly column for a local newspaper. He is a former municipal historian who has written several books on topics ranging from the Civil War, local history, and the American Revolution.
