The 2018-19 flu season has begun and Georgia is experiencing higher levels of flu than anticipated for this time of year. Experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend an annual flu vaccine as the first and best way to protect against influenza. And, although the flu shot can't prevent every case of flu, it can protect you from more severe illness. It’s not too late to get a flu shot; so consider getting a shot for yourself and your family members, especially those with asthma and other chronic illnesses. Health officials encourage families to take precautions to limit the spread of illness, including washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home and keeping ill children home when flu-like and other cold symptoms appear.
If your child has flu-like symptoms, please contact your physician or health clinic for recommendations. The flu may last 7-10 days. If your child has a fever, they must be kept home. They must be fever-free for 24 hours without medication prior to returning to school. Please refer to this Healthy Habits  link for tips on flu prevention. If you have questions about the flu or flu prevention, you may also contact the Gwinnett County Health Department at 770-339-4260.
We appreciate your efforts in helping us keep our students and staff well and healthy!

State Farm's Got Talent
Nikki Toombs, the Education Director of True Colors Theatre (one of Discovery's community partners and advisory council members) invited Discovery Students to audition to participate in Kenny Leon’s Youth Ensemble as a participant in the State Farm, State Farm’s Got Talent Showcase. The event was held downtown at the Rialto Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Shelbei Walker was chosen to sing in the performance. Ngoc Le and Destiny Hale-Jennings were selected to dance in the performance, choreographed by Victor Jackson, a well-known choreographer from The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Braxton Family Values and The Kandi Factory.

The students rehearsed with Victor EVERY DAY last week with dancers from other schools at various locations including Discovery, South Gwinnett, Clayton County Performing Arts and Stillwell School of the Arts.

Although it was an intense week, our students were exposed to and presented with a great opportunity to work with professionals in the arts industry and showcase how fabulous Discovery is. They represented us very well!!!!
Let’s face the facts. Deciding to have a lung cancer screening isn’t easy, but Gwinnett Medical Center can help. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and if found at an early it is more likely to be treatable. See the attached flier to learn more about how you or a loved one can get a lung cancer screen at Gwinnett Medical Center.
Students may request S2 schedule changes for only the following reasons:
  • The student has previously passed the course.
  • The student is scheduled in a course with a teacher with whom the student has previously failed the course.
  • The student is missing a course needed for graduation.
  • The student does not have a complete schedule.
Parents please refrain from dropping off students on Old Norcross Rd and/or Riverside Pkwy. Students are running between cars through the parking lot creating an unsafe situation for our students. Instead, utilize our carpool lane in our Riverside Parkway entrance.
