How We’re Shifting in Our St. Giles Life – a Note From Keith

Hi friends,

Last week the Coronavirus changes came fast and furious, and the Elders made plans for some drastic changes. Since then we have labored to implement the necessary schedule and worship changes, and to determine possibilities for church life in this strange new season.

We’re making this up as we go, but some pieces are already working, such as our livestreamed worship. We had over 130 households tuned in during the actual livestream hour, and the total who have watched it has more than doubled since! Special thanks go to our musicians and techs! Even though they were scrambling, what they did worked very well, and we’ll only get more proficient from here.

Some other pieces that we’re working to put in place are:

  • Small group gatherings (in person for those 65 and younger – 10 or fewer, or via video conferencing for those older or shut in for health reasons)

  •  Video networked classes (see Tommy and Ross’ classes described below),

  • And appropriate means of caring for each other, especially the sick and elderly.

As I wrote you last week, you have some champion Elders! God is guiding. And as always, the Kingdom is advancing, not retreating. This is a hard season, but not without some gifts God would give to us and through us. Let’s discover them together!

Blessings, Keith

Meet Rachel Burns, Our New Publications and Office Specialist
Lynn Thomas is retiring this week, and is training Rachel Burns. There are lots of pieces to this job, and they’re working hard to pass the baton well.

Rachel is a native Richmonder who attended Anderson University for musical theatre and creative writing. As a child she attended St. Giles and has now returned as a member of its staff. She is thankful for this opportunity to serve the church and get to know its people.
Lynn Thomas Is Off to Next Things
After six years of serving as the hub of all things visual here at St. Giles – and doing so with such a joyful and loving spirit, Lynn Thomas is “retiring.” We’ll hear from her on Sunday how that doesn’t mean she’s retiring from serving the Lord, only checking out from the office schedule and publication deadlines.

Lynn has brought so many creative gifts to this role. Rachel will get to build on her wonderful gifts.

With our Coronavirus adaptations, you may not get to see Lynn immediately. But you can call or write with your own thoughts as she moves into the Lord’s next season for her.

Thank you, Lynn! With you, we’re eager to see what the Lord has for you next.

Highlights of the Session Meeting

The Session held its regular meeting on March 23. Here some highlights of their actions:

  • They reviewed the arrangements we made last week for meeting cancellations and livestreamed worship, and kept those arrangements in place.
  • They reviewed means for creating Cluster groups and pastoral care connections.
  • They approved hiring Rachel Burns as our Publications and Office Specialist, to replace Lynn Thomas as she retires at the end of this week.
  • They approved adapting some pews to make designated space for wheelchairs in the sanctuary.
  • They considered how best to support our Children’s Garden Preschool during the months of mandatory shut-down.
  • They heard an update from our Co-Pastor Search Team, and were happy to learn that helpful conversations are continuing, even with the Coronavirus changes.
