Putting Scripture into Action

Joel Simonds

by Rabbi Joel Thal Simonds

We are in the middle of the Counting of the Omer, the spiritually transformational 49 days between Passover (our Exodus from Egypt) and Shavuot (our receiving the Torah at Sinai). For us, Torah is not just the teachings and stories that we learned as children, Torah represents that guide of goodness and justice that our people follow. As we prepare to receive the inspiration of Torah, we also seek to make our lives a living Torah by being a beacon of light and justice for others. Below are a number of ways in which our Synagogue is bringing light and justice into the community through the work of tikkun olam. Join us and help make the work of our hands and the marching of our feet true scriptures of awe.

Walk to End Genocide with Jewish World Watch

Sunday, April 14 at 9am, Pan Pacific Park

Join our University Synagogue group and the greater Los Angeles community in committing to end genocide around the world. There are still a few spots left and 4 days to fill them!

Big Sunday

Sunday, May 5, 9am - 1pm

We are going back into the community with our brothers and sisters from the Ismaili community service organization i-CERV. Big Sunday has asked us to partner with the Grand View Boulevard Elementary School in Mar Vista. They do not have the budget for proper up keep of their school and that is where our hard work will come in. We are going to ensure that they finish the year strong and beautiful by helping them paint various parts of the school, clean and organize classrooms, landscape their gardens, help repair their auditorium, and a number of others projects. We all know that ambiance can add so much to the learning environment and we are honored to help provide for this need and give the students and faculty of Grand View an environment they will be proud to maintain. We will rent buses that will pick us up here at the Synagogue and take us over to the school. This will be an amazing day and we look forward to everyone being involved.

Ending Gun Violence Working Group

Last month our Synagogue Board passed a resolution to end gun violence. The resolution called on our members to come together and create partnerships with other houses of worship and community organizations in this important initiative. Currently members from Valley Beth Shalom and Temple Isaiah would like to meet and strategize how we can work together as a united Jewish community. As we learn from the Prophet Isaiah, who exhorts the people of the earth to "beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks" (Isaiah 2:4). From this teaching we are commanded to turn weapons of destruction into tools for the greater good of society. Please email me if you are interested in this group. To learn more about the Reform Jewish stance on gun violence visit our movement's advocacy page.

Teach Your Teen to Drive... and Stay Alive

Sixteen-year-olds learning to drive can be a moment filled with little wisdom and many heartaches. Judaism has a strong message about ethics, about knowing right from wrong, and about making good decisions. Teach Your Teen to Drive... and stay alive is a book written by Brett Elkins and Bruce Elkins which expresses a fun and highly effective way to deal with the issues teens and parents face as young adults learn to drive, thrive and stay alive. Brett Elkins will join us as guest speaker.
