Before the Celebration
Rabbi Joel Simonds
“My heart is in the east but I am on the edge of the west.” These ageless words from the Jewish philosopher Judah Halevi sum up my feelings this week. As Israel celebrates 70 years of modern statehood my heart is there, but I am here.  Every year during the week of Israel’s independence I find myself longing to return to her ancient soil. Throughout this week in Israel you witness the preparation for the celebration; Israeli flags being placed around the country, school children picking out their outfits for the day (blue jeans and a white shirt), and a feeling of excitement in the air.

Yet, before the celebration begins, Israel mourns. The day before Independence (Yom Ha’atzmaut) is memorial day (Yom HaZikaron). The preparation for independence ceases as the country comes to a stop and remembers those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the people, land and promise that is Israel.  The day begins with a national siren that brings the country to stand-still. Motorists stop on the freeway and stand next to their vehicles, shoppers put down their bags and stand side by side with store clerks, school children stand with the teachers and for one minute the country remembers. Words cannot describe the power, honor and beauty of the moment.

After the silence, the day is continues with ceremonies and tears. Families visit the cemetery, candles are lit, even the music on the radio is somber. It’s a day in which Israel mourns her fallen children-young boys and girls who defended the dream of our ancestors.

And then, as the Psalmist reminds us, we turn our mourning into dancing and celebrate life. Memorial Day ends and just an hour later the celebration for Independence begins. The streets, which just a few hours ago were filled with tears and mourning are now filled with music and celebration.

And this…This is Israel. Tears of mourning and tears of celebration fill our hearts this week as we celebrate 70 years of statehood. Today I will stream Israeli radio, I will stand for a minute in silence at my desk, I will wear my blue jeans and white shirt, I will do all of this on the edge of the west, while my heart this week is in the east.

Mitzvah Corps:
We're Here For You!
University Synagogue Mitzvah Corps is here, and we care!  Dedicated to serving our fellow congregants as they encounter major life cycle events, we will gladly send a welcome gift to a new baby, and provide support for ill or mourning congregants and their families (delivering a hot meal, completing a minyan, running an errand, etc.).

If you’re in need of some TLC from the Mitzvah Corps, please just inform any clergy member or the synagogue office.   We’d also love to have you join us as a volunteer — the demands are few and the rewards are plentiful!

Please contact Susan Wieder at sdwieder@mac.com .
