Family Camp 2018
Family Camp 2018 was a huge success! Our group nearly doubled in size as well as enthusiasm from last year.

Thanks to Camp JCA Shalom at the Shalom Institute for hosting, the Jewish Federation for the Family Camp Grant and mentorship and all of our amazing families. The weekend gave kids (and adults!) an unforgettable weekend to unplug surrounded by nature, new friends and our University Synagogue community.

Mazal tov to Rabbi Stanley and Resa Davids whose g randdaughter Beth is the  California State   winner ( grades 4-6) of a Library of Congress contest.  Beth’s parents are Rabbi  Ronn and Nicole Davids.
Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, Ph.D., 12th President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, z”l
Our entire Reform Jewish family is in mourning over the untimely and tragic loss of  Rabbi Dr. Aaron Panken, President of Hebrew Union College, distinguished scholar, leader of the Jewish people, extraordinary teacher and cherished friend.   As Rabbi Sally Priesand wrote, “there are times when God asks nothing of us except silence, patience and tears.” May his memory continue to be an inspiration for us all.

Rabbi Panken taught: “ Reform Judaism has always symbolized what I consider to be the best of Judaism – firmly rooted in our tradition, yet egalitarian, inclusive of patrilineal Jews and intermarried families, welcoming to the LGBT community, politically active, and respectful of other faiths and ideologies.” He will be sorely missed.

and longer our ancestors traveled in the desert…)
Big Sunday is fast approaching, and University Synagogue is again delighted to partner with our dedicated friends at i-CERV, the Ismaili Muslim Volunteer Service group. We’ll be creating an inspirational garden for the kids at Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts. Put on your gardening clothes, green your thumbs, and help plant new flowers and bushes, raise old flower beds, and make the school’s quad look amazing.

Please email Bennett Tramer at if you’re interested in participating, or if you have any questions. No need to individually register on the Big Sunday website, University Synagogue is already signed up.  We just need a rough head count. So let us know – and see you there for a Jewish-Muslim gardening extravaganza!

Mitzvah Corps:
We're Here For You!
University Synagogue Mitzvah Corps is here, and we care!  Dedicated to serving our fellow congregants as they encounter major life cycle events, we will gladly send a welcome gift to a new baby, and provide support for ill or mourning congregants and their families (delivering a hot meal, completing a minyan, running an errand, etc.).

If you’re in need of some TLC from the Mitzvah Corps, please just inform any clergy member or the synagogue office.   We’d also love to have you join us as a volunteer — the demands are few and the rewards are plentiful!
