From Rabbi Feinstein’s
D’var Torah at the Annual Meeting
Rabbi Feinstein 2
We have so much to be proud of during our 75 years. It would be beyond the scope of our gathering to list all the life changing moments in people's lives, births and conversions and b’nai mitzvah and weddings, helping people at sad moments coping with loss, trying to bring healing and comfort, touching the soul through music or learning for all ages, , the countless opportunities for personal growth, all of which stem from the bold decision 75 years ago to build a Westside congregation serving God, Torah, and Israel. We couldn't possibly count the numbers of people who have been touched by our congregation, its members and leaders.

We may enumerate a bit about University Synagogue’s last few years. We were among the first congregations in North America to achieve GreenFaith certification for our environmental efforts. We are among the first synagogues to install a Solar Ner Tamid. Our Garden is sustained by our members and all food gleaned-lemons, zucchini, tomatoes and more-is donated to the St. Joseph Center. Our preschool students have quick access to our highly secure safe room and staff receives ongoing training to keep up with the best practices in a changing world. In 2014 we installed our Merkaz Teva or Outdoor Classroom and our preschoolers grow their own herbs and fruits! We increased ADA access into our building ten years ago by raising the road on the Sunset side, and installed an elevator to enable people within our facility to go from floor to floor. The number of innovations our congregation has achieved is quite remarkable.

But we are not here tonight to merely account for what we have done in the past. We have to continue to strive to be the best. It takes a unique and sacred partnership between our clergy, educators, and lay leaders, between professionals and volunteers, to make our congregation function well. Tonight, let us thank all those who work so hard to make University Synagogue work, numbering it among the finest congregations in North America. And let me personally thank all who have assisted me during this recuperative period in my life, who have helped me heal from my own personal ordeal following my surgeries. I couldn't be standing here without your numerous Mitzvot, and I am so very grateful to you.

The Psalmist(Psalm 90) said: "Teach us to number our days, that we may attain a heart of wisdom." As we gather tonight to focus on the ledger of congregational business, let us number our joys, and make each day count.

University Synagogue Educator Finds New Directions in
Hebrew Learning with BJE
On April 26 th , 50 educators (including our own Jessica Shamout) from across Los Angeles gathered for a daylong conference on Innovations in Hebrew learning and teaching focused on complementary religious schools. The conference was led by two of the most prominent educators in the field of Hebrew learning: Nachama Moskowitz, creator of Onward Hebrew, based in Cleveland, and Rabbi Nicki Greninger, one of the leading religious school educators in this new innovative approach to teaching Hebrew, based in the Bay Area.
The conference covered the range of Hebrew education challenges in today’s religious schools, including topics such as “Jewish Life Vocabulary” and Tefilah. The overarching focus of the workshop was the “Sound-to-print approach”, a new methodology for engaging students engaged and making them into lifelong Hebrew learners.
The conference was sponsored by Reshet – LA, a joint project of BJE: Builders of Jewish Education and the Union for Reform Judaism. Reshet LA is funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

Mitzvah Corps:
We're Here For You!
University Synagogue Mitzvah Corps is here, and we care!  Dedicated to serving our fellow congregants as they encounter major life cycle events, we will gladly send a welcome gift to a new baby, and provide support for ill or mourning congregants and their families (delivering a hot meal, completing a minyan, running an errand, etc.).

If you’re in need of some TLC from the Mitzvah Corps, please just inform any clergy member or the synagogue office.   We’d also love to have you join us as a volunteer — the demands are few and the rewards are plentiful!
