Alana Levitt, Assistant Director of our Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC),
In Special Master’s Program
I am so fortunate to be a part of the inaugural cohort of Early Childhood Educators studying towards my Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education at the American Jewish University.

As a parent of three children and working full-time, the dream of achieving an advanced degree felt further and further out of my grasp. When the opportunity was presented by AJU, I was hesitant at first to commit my time and energy- are there truly enough hours in the day? Is this degree something that will help my family, my career, my future?

Fortunately I am supported by our Director of Early Childhood, April Schafer, my husband Sam, and the tribe of family and friends who help me keep the Levitt family running and afloat. I look forward to bringing my experience and knowledge to University Synagogue ECLC and to continuing our mission to strengthen our community and enrich the lives of our families and children in our care.

The Blessing of a Bed
Over the past few years, members of University Synagogue have helped in the creation of Bruin Shelter, a program that assists UCLA students experiencing homelessness. Prior to Bruin Shelter, students would sacrifice housing by sleeping in their cars or at the library in order to save money for tuition. The Shelter offers a safe and supportive environment to sleep, individual storage lockers, and communal dinners 7 nights a week.

As Bruin Shelter enters its third season, its newest residents are in need of bed linens and comforters. University Synagogue’s Tikkun Olam Committee is thrilled at the program’s success and excited to help support them.

We’re aiming to gather around 15 new  twin comforters  and 15 new  twin linens : would you like to help by donating one or more items? (The links lead to inexpensive examples from Amazon, but you can also purchase from Marshall’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Big Lots, or anywhere else you like.) Items for donation can be dropped off at UniSyn. Thanks in advance for performing this important mitzvah, and helping to keep students warm and safe as they seek a higher education.

Thank You!
