Introducing Our New Rector ...  Patricia Phaneuf Alexander

May 27, 2019

Dear Members of the St. Dunstan's Community,

We are writing to joyfully announce that the selection process for our new Rector has been completed. After concluding their interviews, the Search Committee and Vestry have selected the Rev. Patricia (Patty) Phaneuf Alexander to be the new Rector for St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church.

Patty has been a priest for 18 years. She has extensive experience as a parish priest, having served for 7 years as the Vicar for Grace Episcopal Church in the Bronx in New York City, and as the Assistant Minister for 4 years at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Bedford, NY. For the last 8 years, Patty has served as the Head Chaplain and Head of the Philosophy and Religion Department at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. Many of you may find her a familiar face as she has served as a supply priest at St. Dunstan's on occasion. The Vestry is confident that Patty's experience and talents will make her an excellent leader for our church, and we are very happy to have her as our new Rector.

Patty is married to the Reverend J. Randolph (Randy) Alexander, who currently serves as Rector of Immanuel Church on-the-Hill in Alexandria, Virginia. Patty and Randy are the proud parents of three sons: William, a rising freshman at Elon University; Peter, a rising Junior at St. Andrew's; and Andrew, a rising eighth grader at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School in Alexandria.

The selection process involved a lot of work on the part of the volunteers on the search committee (Donna Alvarez, Fred Bentley, Clint Chamberlin, Lynne Adduci Leonard, Sue Newman, John Wyss), which was led by Chuck Cash. Please express your gratitude to them for their efforts when you have a chance. I'd also like to give my thanks to the congregation for participating in the process, voicing your opinions during our self-assessment sessions, giving such a great send-off to Jeff MacKnight, and being patient during this time of uncertainty.

This selection is just the start of the transition to a new Rector for St. Dunstan's. Patty will be completing her work at St. Andrew's School this summer, and her official start date at St. Dunstan's will be September 1st. Church services will continue through the summer with temporary clergy. After her start in September, it will be important that the St. Dunstan's community comes together to support her as she learns about our church and assumes her new leadership role.

Finally, I'd like to say that this change gives me great optimism for the future of our church. Building on the strong community we have now, with a commitment to worship, fellowship, and outreach, I see a bright future as we enter into this new phase. Keep St. Dunstan's in your prayers during this transition.

Please feel free to contact either one of us with any questions or concerns.

Yours in Christ,

Let us view this moment of change as an invitation to build upon that which has been given to us so generously by our founders. May we possess an open heart to all the possibilities that lie ahead. We hope these months of preparation will further unite us as one faith community, and that we will continue to cherish the strengths and gifts of one another. May we find new leaders who will unite us in our mission and shared values. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.

We pray for St. Dunstan's Missionaries, Cameron and Roberto Vivanco, who serve in Quito, Ecuador, and the parish of Buen Pastor.
