9:00-12:00 pm: Keynote Workshop: Thinking Holistically About Our Region's Challenges
Participants will learn the systems thinking methodology and how to use it as a tool to create meaningful change, identify the interconnected systems/factors affecting the biggest challenges in the region, and analyze the following question about regional transportation:

  • Why, despite the region's best efforts, do we struggle to move from planning to implementation of widescale transportation efforts?

1:15 pm-2:30 pm: A Civic Conversation on Transit in the TJCOG Region
This session is a partnership with NC State's Institute for Emerging Issues' Civic Conversation Initiative

Join TJCOG for a facilitated conversation about our region's assets, limitations, frustrations, and goals around widescale transit and transportation implementation. This conversation is open to all attendees interested in an honest and welcoming discussion, and will follow the Civic Conversation Principles put forth by the initiative:
  • Listen first to understand
  • Be curious and open to learning
  • Suspend judgement and extend grace
  • Maximize diversity of perspectives

2:45 pm-4:00 pm: Anticipating the Disruption of Transportation Funding: A Call for Coordinated Regional Planning
More and more frequently, state and federal funds for transportation projects of all sizes are becoming less consistent and more limited. As the TJCOG region continues to address aging infrastructure, a growing population, increased congestion, and changing technology, ongoing conversations about how funding is received and prioritized are critical. Moderator Tony Lathrop, Chair of the Funding/Appropriation Strategies Committee, will lead a facilitated conversation about current efforts to improve and adjust local and state funding, including the newly formed NC First Commission, what innovative funding opportunities are on the horizon to assist local and regional transportation efforts, the critical need for regional collaboration across various jurisdictional lines and the enormous potential for transportation infrastructure to spread economic opportunity across regions to rural, suburban and urban areas.
