“No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God.
Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don’t speak with such arrogance!
For the LORD is a God who knows what you have done; He will judge your actions.”
1 Samuel 2:2-3 NLT
Let Your Words Be Humble
Do you struggle to guard your tongue? Is there a human on the planet who doesn’t? All Believers spout off with pride at times. James chapter 3 talks about how boastful the tongue is and how hard it is to control it. James 3:5 niv says: “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” It’s a bittersweet, comforting passage of scripture that lets us know the struggle is real for absolutely everyone.
Key Points About James 3:5:
Small but powerful: The tongue, though physically small, can have a significant impact with its words.
Comparison to fire: The verse compares the tongue to a small fire that can ignite a large forest, highlighting its potential for destruction.
Importance of controlling speech: This passage emphasizes the need to be careful with what we say because our words can have great power.
James 1:19 nlt says:
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the Word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.”
Striving to eliminate pride in our life and focusing on humility before God and others will help us with our Communication and our Relationships. For good reason, the Bible instructs us to keep our words humble. Proverbs 15:1-2 nlt: A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness.”
So what’s the best thing we can do to control our tongue and guard it from pride? Keep it so busy with prayer and praise that it can’t do much else. If you feel like boasting, get pumped up about God. “As 2 Corinthians 10:17 nlt says: “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”
